In fact, I think Hitchens, while making some valid points, reveals more of his own (somewhat skewed and bewildered) attitude toward life and women specifically, rather than accurately describes an objective reality. Which, granted, is his stinking right as a writer -- no doubt. The valid point he makes is that women do not have to be funny, but guys do -- to impress women and get ahead in the reproductive game (thank evolution for that). Just as guys have to compete in any and all other ways to be noticed by women and to "get" them. So far, so good, Hitch. But when he goes into the whole feminine world as he sees it, he is far off the mark, revealing his own conflicted feelings about women and femininity more than anything else -- feelings heavily seasoned with well-worn cliches. He really sounds like a medieval Catholic there. (Hmm...)

What's also amazing to me that this is Hitchens talking here, evaluating the sense of humor or lack thereof in others -- Hitchens, the guy who singularly represents a total lack of humor, at least when it comes to himself. Hitchens, who could not make a girl laugh even if he slit his wrists in a drunken stupor (which, to think of it, appears to be his specific brand of "humor.")

And, mind you, CMC, I like him. However, I do not adore or idolize him quite so. He is, without a doubt, a gifted writer, but also one who too often allows his arrogance and hubris to eclipse both his talent and his message. Some of his greatest fans, I'm afraid, are people who confuse these two aspects of the man, awed by his chutzpah and thinking they appreciate his talent. While there is an overlap there, these two are decidedly not the same. Good grief! Is there anything less funny than hearing a woman relate a dream she's just had?

For men, it is a tragedy that the two things they prize the most—women and humor—should be so antithetical."

I'm laughing my ass off. This is indeed hilarious, in so many ways. We are ruled by the moon and the tides... Poor Hitch. He's gotta get out more often -- and lose that medieval outlook. The world has changed a bit when he wasn't looking. Women are a tad more complex than moon and tides, but hey, who am I to say? Though I feel for the chap, what with my feminine predilection for things sentimental and of no discernible value. No wonder he thinks life so tragic and women unfunny -- his wife's name is Carol Blue. Serves him right, I'd say (if I were not so preoccupied with crystals and lockets in shapes of tiny coffins).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
