It's been done before, and a good read of that tells us that the definition of unstable is pretty unstable itself. After that we can get into and just what exactly are you going to do with the institutionalized -- because we don't exactly have a good track record on that score either...historically speaking.

And from the sounds of it the shooter's mom could be labelled as one of the kooks herself. She was a survivalist...one wonders if the son started out "unstable" or was made that way by his mom.

In the meantime, I take the Joker argument: kids get killed every day, people get killed every day -- go look up what the fatality records were for DRC in the years 05-07, take a look at the fatality records for Jenny McCarthy and her anti-vaccine bs in this country, how many children does China do away with in a given year? How many children are killed by drive bys in this country every year? Heck, I wonder if Ms. Althouse knows how many children died in institutions for the "unstable"?
But that doesn't make the front pages; it hardly get mentioned at all...because those are deaths we have told ourselves are part and parcel of the landscape and "supposed" to happen.
We all make a big show about these deaths (and don't get me wrong, it was horrible -- no innocent person's death should be taken lightly, and little kids are pretty damn innocent in my books) but when push comes to shove it appears to be just for show because we really don't give two flying sticks about people, innocent people, being killed; we really don't have a problem with it as long as it follows "the rules".

And that's one of the reasons I generally hate people. The End.

PW
Glad to hear there's no brain damage -- he has a chance then. I hope things turn out ok; meningitis is a bitch.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
