Just a reminder, that I've been moved to another cell for my own safety, with my things following shortly. This Blogger site will still exist, so you can hang out if you like, but the majority of my new postings will be over there, in the same "crackheaded" manner to which you've grown accustomed. As a matter of fact, it can get better over there because the Wordpress site isn't governed by the same rules against crazy that Blogger is. Over here, I can only print sane commentary.

Since Blogger has decided TMR is oh, so beyond the pale, I've been invited to start blogging with the fine folks at Flying Tiger Comics, so look for some upcoming stuff over there. I'll still be posting here, so keep coming back, but I'll also be adding some content to what they do already.

I'm happy to report visitors read more of TMR now - and the blog definitely gets more donations because of them - but it would be nice to have the number of readers up, too. We had quite a crowd before the blog was labeled "indecent", and hopefully we can get something going again. So, if the barrier keeps you from checking me out while you're at work or something, hop over to Flying Tiger Comics and I'll be glad to start scratching your conservative anti-NewAge/anti-cult itch at the new location. Just don't tell Blogger!

I'm Starting To Get Turned Off To Facebook

This isn't exactly my experience on Facebook - my experience is of "friends" wearing blinders to such a point they want to immediately "de-friend" if you disagree with them on anything. Today, it was a black gay guy who decided that - because he's reading a new book on Malcolm X (the one that claims Malcolm X was gay) - Donald Trump is a "Klansman" for demanding to see Obama's birth certificate.

Seriously.

Now his other friends are writing in, telling him to choose his friends more carefully - I'm a whackjob! There was also the former Punk, who is now a NewAger, and has decided our 20 year friendship is worth abandoning since I informed her there's no such thing as a "chakra". She not only de-friended me but closed off her personal email. Yeah, there's a reason I got away from these people.

What We Learned From The Ultimate Con Man

There's an interview with Diana Henriques, who interviewed Bernie Madoff, that has so many important lessons for us I have to quote it multiple times. First up - the price of fraud:

When I first met him in prison, my first impression was how polished he had become since I had known him 15 years earlier, even in his prison uniform. Every crease is crisp, every button is buttoned. His belt is shiny, his shoes gleam. Very much the dandy, even in prison. And very much in control of our conversation. He had a very engaging, low-key style. Never took his eyes off of me. [He] leaned forward and was very interested in everything I had to say. A few little jokes, a little bit of flattery. But very much on-message.

When I saw him the second time, after his son’s suicide, I was stunned at the change in him. From across the room, I would not have recognized him as the same man. So much thinner. In fact, the uniform involves one of the those web belts and he had the belt pulled so tight that the end of it was folded under to keep it from flopping. One of his buttons on his shirt was undone and he didn’t notice it until about halfway through. He buttoned it up. This had been an immaculately groomed, crisp, confident man back in August. In February, he seemed to holding on to his control with both hands. Fiercely. No jokes. No humor. Barely a smile. And this was two months after his son’s suicide. He was clearly devastated by that.

Next up - what marriage really means:

Madoff’s sons were deeply upset that Ruth did not walk out on him. I worked very hard to try to understand, through as many confidential sources as I could, why she didn’t go. And I asked Madoff himself why she stayed. That’s the one point in the first interview where he broke down and cried. And I do think it was genuine. He didn’t even have a Kleenex with him. His lawyer had to find some little paper napkins in the snack bar area. But he said all her friends told her she should leave, which I knew to be true. He told her she should leave, that she didn’t have to stay. As the firestorm of criticism and vitriol was growing, he could see that it was hurting her to stay with him. But she would not walk out on him. And, as I understand it, how she has explained it, is that she had a love affair with this man for 50 years and she just felt she couldn’t abandon him at this time of his near destruction.

You know Larry and I have been married for 42 years and I can sort of understand it. I don’t think younger couples can. She met and fell in love with Bernie when she was 13 years old. He was a lifeguard, she wasn’t even in high school yet. Pretty girl. And he was handsome, sun-bleached hair. She fell in love the first time she met him and married him at 18. You have to keep that in mind when you weigh the decisions she made after his arrest. It was a lifelong love affair. Everybody who knew them agreed that they were still like sweethearts. One person said that the only person who thought more of Bernie than Ruth was Bernie. She really worshipped him.

Let's follow that up with the reason integrity is so important, and why - in a world filled with so many lacking in it - there's so much fraud:

I can guarantee you that there is another Ponzi scheme out there that we haven’t heard about yet. Ponzi schemes are, to me, one of the most fascinating crimes on Wall Street, one of the most fascinating financial crimes that there is.

The air they breathe is trust. A Ponzi scheme cannot grow in an environment that’s devoid of trust. Nothing else can either, so in order to eliminate Ponzi schemes, you’d have to create a world completely devoid of trust. And when you’ve got a world like that, number one, none of us wants to live in it. And, number two: You can’t run a modern economy without a minimal level of trust. But that level of trust is exactly the level of trust a Ponzi schemer needs to get away with it. Now, Ponzi schemes are a peculiar crime in that you don’t feel any pain until the very end.

I think the Madoff story introduces a new species of Ponzi scheme. Traditionally, we’ve thought of Ponzi schemes as the classic, too-good-to-be-true fraud. Fifty percent returns a month. Double your money in 10 days. The classic Ponzi scheme, all the way back to the first one in the 1920s, appealed to our greed. The get-rich-quick itch. The Madoff scheme did not appeal to people’s greed; it appealed to their fear. Through most of the Madoff scam, you could’ve made more money somewhere else. There were years when the Magellan Fund at Fidelity was producing much better results that Madoff’s investors were getting. It wasn’t that they were greedy: He was so consistent. He was so safe. They felt safe with Bernie in an increasingly volatile, scary, complicated market. If a Ponzi scheme appeals to your greed, a Madoff scheme appeals to your fears. I can’t tell you how many people told me, “He made me feel safe.”

Those are the kinds of frauds I worry we’re going to see more of.

Got that, people? Protect yourself. Protect your loved ones. Forget trying to seem nice:

Tell the truth.

And finally, here's a quote that captures how I see others looking at the world, not considering the real consequences of their actions, as they look out for their own desires in affairs, or money-making schemes, or any number of other endeavors:

[Bernie Madoff doesn't think about his clients] who committed suicide and their families. Not the ones who’ve had to uproot their entire lives and sell their beloved homes. The human cost of the crime is part of the equation that he just doesn’t see. He’s utterly in denial about that.

Self-deception is an extremely dangerous practice. Lying to ourselves is how we get in the most trouble. If there is a lesson, it is the oldest human lesson. To thine own self be true.

If people take nothing else away from the book, I hope they take that. Lying to yourself is a luxury that you just can’t afford.

I think about all of that - every day - which makes me weird to others, but also makes them very weird to me. People innocently defend evil nowadays, and it's costs are something they never consider until too late. And usually to someone else's detriment.

Don't be the one.

You guys allow evil to flourish because you have no interest in thinking about how to achieve anything good in this world - you're scared to death of even trying to get it.

You now have Mccarthyism labeled as bad because he went about trying to eliminate communism the wrong way. But there's nothing bad about trying to eliminate communism. You could try to get it right, but you don't because you focus on the wrong thing - the way Joe went about it.

You now have witch hunts labeled as bad because Salem went about trying to eliminate witches the wrong way. But there's nothing bad about trying to eliminate witches. You could try to get it right, but you don't because you focus on the wrong thing - the way Salem went about it.

And it's the same for every obvious evil that exists today. You always focus on the wrong-headed approach, allowing the evil free reign, and then look at anyone who suffers under it, or wants to eliminate it, as "hyperbolic and weird". You're not "sophisticated" for trying to find the grey area in evil. You're just a part of whatever evil you're shilling for.

Martin Luther King said injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere and that is the result of the attitude I see around me. Fraud is rampant in this society because those around me have a billion excuses for why we shouldn't tackle it. Look at the Bernie Madoff scandal for a prime example of an open fraud continuing for almost a man's entire life - until he himself confessed - because, even with people screaming there's something wrong there, no one was willing to go after him.

The pedophile Sai Baba just died. That's a single man who made millions, and held off the entire world, because they just refused to acknowledge he wasn't a "living god". There is no one on this planet who can justify it.

Who can adequately explain why, decades ago, the powers that be didn't say, "That isn't so"? Instead, they let that pervert abuse children and kept the creep living in the lap of luxury. You did the same thing with the Maharishi.

I always rant on homeopathy because it's such an obvious scam - it's only water - but do you see anyone picketing Whole Foods for perpetrating a fraud on the public? No - people are actually PROUD to shop there! It's a fucking badge of honor to be part of it! Because to say "You're wrong and you're doing wrong" is just not politically correct! Fuck, the term "politically correct" is Orwellian in itself! But let somebody say so and they're the crazy person! It's all evil, I tell you!

In my life, I have seen almost every form of barbarity known to man, and almost all of it happened before my eyes in the United States. It happened because there's always some asshole with an excuse for why nobody can do anything to stop it - when stopping it is the only answer for how to stop it.

I have put my life on the line for others, countless times, and it never ceases to amaze me that I'm alone in doing so. You know it's true - how often to we hear about a crime happening before a crowd and no one stops to help? Isn't there a YouTube video out there now of two black girls attacking a white girl and all some guy did was videotape it? Some older lady got involved by saying, "stop" but nothing more - she certainly wasn't going to throw herself into the breach, was she? Would you? A father just died at a McDonald's for doing so but, I'll bet, that was because he was the only person to get involved - and he was alone because the rest did nothing! You're cowards. And you're cowards because you don't have the conviction that stopping evil is what you're supposed to do!

And you certainly won't entertain your role in evil, will you? Not you, as you protest someone else! It's always someone else! It's George Bush, or Dick Cheney, or someone other than yourself! Where's the oil you said we were getting from Iraq? You were WRONG, asshole! Barack Obama is president - about as big a wrong as this nation has ever seen in it's history - because YOU were wrong about everything else! Oh, you had to have him because you were so WRONG, but will you ever admit it? Hell no! Not even the people complaining about him now will admit they were wrong to have ever voted him into office - that's on somebody else!

Even after the horror of 9/11, you laughed when George Bush said there are evildoers out there - you laughed! What was so fucking funny? Whatsa matter? 3,000 Americans dead in one morning wasn't enough proof for you? Again: you chose to focus on what you thought was stupidity than what was important - the people trying to kill us. YOU did that!

You're still focused on it. Almost every attempt to reign in the enemy is greeted by hoots and cat calls rather than suggestions for how to get the job done. How fucking helpful. How fucking immature. How very YOU!

This nation should be looking the possible fate of failure, for the very first time, squarely in the eye - and acting against it - but it's people are too concerned with trying to appear to be nice than good. It should be shutting up the hypocrites and throwing them overboard. It should be shutting up the liars and jailing them. Anyone involved in fraud should have to fight for their very lives because that's what they've forced all of us to do now.

You are not stardust and you are not golden - you're a bunch of tin, covered in gold flake, and God damn it, on behalf of all the Americans who never bought into your bullshit, I want my money back!

One of the biggest problems I have talking to people, online, is their assumption they can read my mind, sort my thoughts, or interpret my meaning, without asking me for clarification. Setting up a bunch of straw men and then knocking them down yourself is your and Obama's tactic, not mine, so it doesn't surprise me you're confused as to where I'm coming from:

Ever since Jayanti Tamm, the author of the cult novel Cartwheels In A Sari, did a blog on The Huffington Post called "What Is a Cult? Recognizing And Avoiding Unhealthy Groups", I've been telling you I was going to do something on the cult phenomena, and, I guess, it's time for me to deliver.

I want to be clear that I'm not writing this because I think it'll do a thing to stem the tide of cultism (as a matter of fact, I'm convinced, it'll be no more effective than anything else that's been done). No, I'm writing this because - like a Jew during the Holocaust, leaving a note in a buried bottle for someone, anyone, in the future to find - I realize the rampant cultism we live under is probably killing me, merely because I'm aware of it, and the country - merely because it is not - so I want to have something out there that said not only that I lived, but that I knew what and who my, and my country's, killers were.

Here's how I regarded Tamm's article when it originally came out:

Read it. I'm going to blog on it at length, in my next post, because it's completely outdated information. Actually, it's even worse than that:

It's about as wrong as wrong can get.

Here's your first hint about how deceptive it is:

So, how wrong are Jayanti Tamm's observations, and how do mine differ? Her first paragraph in The Huffington Post piece started off with these words:

Who in our over-stimulated, media-saturated, hyper-connected world would ever go and knowingly join a cult? The answer is no one.

That's now an anti-cult or post-cult mantra, and probably sounds about right to most people, painting the appropriate image of someone who's been duped into doing something they never intended.

But the important phrase here is "the appropriate image", because - just as the Mystic Bourgeoisie's Chris Locke observed that "nobody wants to be seen as New Age because nobody wants to be seen as irreparably stupid" - very few will admit they willingly joined a cult, for that and other reasons.

Proving, right from the start, that Tamm's column is a bunch of deceptive and outdated mind mush is this quote from an expose' on award-winning director and recent Scientology defector, Paul Haggis:

Haggis was born in 1953, and grew up in London, Ontario, where his father, Ted, had a construction company. He decided at an early age to be a writer, but after leaving school, he drifted, hanging out with hippies and drug dealers.

He fell in love with Diane Gettas, a nurse, and they began sharing a one-bedroom apartment. One day in 1975, when he was 22, Haggis was walking to a record store when a young man pressed a book into his hands. "You have a mind," the man said. "This is the owner's manual." The book was Dianetics: The Modern Science Of Mental Health, by L Ron Hubbard, which was published in 1950. By the time Haggis began reading it, Dianetics had sold about 2.5m copies. Today, according to the church, that figure has reached more than 21m.

Haggis opened the book and saw a page stamped with the words "Church of Scientology". He had heard about Scientology a couple of months earlier, from a friend who had called it a cult. The thought that he might be entering a cult didn't bother him. In fact, he said, "it drew my interest. I tend to run toward things I don't understand."

So much for "no one" knowingly joining a cult.

The truth is, in our want-to-be-rebelious post-Boomer culture, people will and have joined all kinds of weird cults by the billions - and, waving their freak flag, they're proud of doing so - if not always honest about it.

The Huffington Post's Arianna Huffington was a member of the Rajneesh, a so-called "dangerous cult".

The Rajneesh practiced open sexual intercourse amongst it's members and attempted to poison an entire town in Oregon for political purposes. Huffington once described her time in the cult to The Washington Post as "like knowing there was another dimension to life and that I wanted to experience it, knowing that nothing else mattered as much. It took me over completely.”

Without ever having renounced her cultism, Huffington is now a major player in American politics.

Of course, she could describe her cult experience positively because no one has ever seriously questioned her about it in an informed manner.

For instance, compare her answer to that of the Rajneesh cult's second in command, Sheela Birnstiel AKA Ma Anand Sheela (above, center) after she was recently questioned in the Swiss town of Basel:

"I am labeled a criminal. It is stamped on my forehead. I have been punished. Leave me alone."

Sheela - a power mad cultist who committed heinous crimes in America - is now a successful Swiss businesswoman.

Arianna Huffinton, one of Sheela's devoted disciples, is now a successful American businesswoman - one now allowing Jayanti Tamm to publish wrong and misleading information about cultism on her website - the very phenomena the power mad Huffington is (still) involved in.

So Jayanti Tamm also isn't doing too badly for herself, either, thank you very much.

Meanwhile, I am now suffering the effects of the cultism people such as they have unleashed around me.

Considering I've never joined a cult, that's something which no one can say is right,...but, being only vaguely aware of what's happening, the country also isn't standing up and saying it's wrong, either - nobody's actually, actively, stopping the cultists - whatever the manner or effects of the cultism they're profiting from.

And as I've said, I don't hold out much hope they're going to stand up anytime soon, so my fate - and, yes, I think the country's - is probably set:

We will die, together, as the victims of cultism.

Game Change: Exposing Faith Healers On Easter (Derren Brown Is Back On The Case)

This story is connected to that last post, on lawyers abandoning prosecuting a faith healer, showing it can be done if you know what you're doing:

"I guess I've gone from being somebody who wanted to go: 'Look I can do magic tricks – aren't I clever?' to having grown out of that now," says Derren Brown, who Channel 4 audiences have watched apparently predict the lottery numbers and play Russian roulette live on air. His Easter Monday show aims to discredit faith healers – and do so using a member of the public posing as a pastor who can perform miracles. "[It's] about somebody else's journey rather than me looking clever and doing tricks and things."

Those who watched Hero at 30,000 Feet last autumn might question Brown's change of direction; I'm not sure I was ever convinced by the idea, let alone the execution. But his new adventure finds him firing on all cylinders – faith healers shouldn't expect an easy ride. "I realised it wasn't just [like] psychics and mediums," Brown says. "I realised they're genuinely dangerous."

Brown grew up Christian and saw faith healers as "worrisome" but not to be taken too seriously – a view he didn't change until he abandoned his faith. "Coming out of Christianity altogether and having a slightly clearer sense in my own mind of what I believed and what I didn't believe … it was much clearer to me: no, no, this is just a scam," he says.

And so, Brown recruited a volunteer, and taught him the tricks of faith healing: how the blind are made to see, the deaf hear, limbs lengthened. And then "Pastor James" and Brown headed for America to see if they could play the healers at their own game. The pair's adventures make for some great television – but Brown also wants to make a serious point: that faith healing exploits those it claims to help.

"You have the despair of all those people who are no better – and it's despair because they're blaming their own selves and their faith for it not working," he says. "And then you have these hordes of people who are following these healers round America; chronically ill people going from gig to gig to gig – and it just never happening, so there's that wake of despair. And then there's the money side of it." The top healers, Brown says, earn more than Hollywood A-listers – and what's more, because it's religion, it's all tax free.

And they can be busted - easily - if you understand the landscape, but lawyers are reluctant to go there.

This Is Sad - It's Beyond Sad - It's Pathetic

When it comes to NewAge, lawyers today are mostly ignorant cowards with no idea what they're doing:

The court case against an accused cancer-cure scammer who promised potential clients she could use "faith healing" to cure them has been dropped by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.  The Federal Court was this morning told the ACCC was discontinuing in its case against self-proclaimed spiritual healer Gwyneth Graham.  

The commission had launched a prosecution against Ms Graham in February claiming she had made false and misleading representations. In March, the Commission had applied for injunctions against the alleged healer.

  The Federal Court was previously told one promotion for her alleged cure had claimed the "spiritual healing" was 100 per cent effective and treated all types of cancer.

  The court had also been told the treatment cost up to $495 and included walking into water and re-emerging "like Jesus".  Federal Court Justice Antony Siopis last month raised concerns that the case would test the blurred border between trade practices issues and matters of faith and spirituality.

  The judge had acknowledged those suffering cancer were a vulnerable market but went on to describe matters of spirituality a "slippery slope" and made a distinction between alleged drug-based cures and those requiring faith or a belief from a client.
"Can you ever find that the conduct is misleading if it is founded on a representation that 'I can if you believe'," Justice Siopis had said.  

The judge had suggested the ACCC give serious thought about whether it was appropriate to pursue the case given its legal complexity.

Let somebody with experience in cultism at 'em, and these con artists would be begging to go to prison. Especially the true believers. They hate being cornered by someone who understands them. And a court of law is the place to do it, because they can't shut down the proceedings, or run away, or make their stupid excuses. Everyone seeing what they're up to, like in front of a jury, is everything they fear.

You know, nothing with the kind of seriousness you hear in Hendrix's "Hey, Joe", or the countless male/female threats and beatdowns you can find in Rap ("Wear the wrong color outfit/can get your mouth split") but just a general kind of, almost lighthearted, if-you-fuck-up of a warning song? Did they disappear with the rise of feminism and the metrosexual? I know women have made them, because I did a post on them (I'll find it for you and put a link in a later edition of this series) but what's happened to the men? Or am I missing them?

Of course, I'm not part of the whole Grrrl Power thing, because - let's face it - I can kick the ass of 99% of the girls out there, so the very idea was a joke, everyone pretending women were strong, protected by laws and a culture designed to hem men in to allow women to act like fools at everyone's expense (Oh shit, Rush is discussing the founder of Earth Day killing a woman - figures). There were, and always have been, tough women (Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane, etc.) so all feminist culture did was allow the female versions of male jerks free reign. What the hell kind of insanity is going on in Canada?:

A Canadian comic has been ordered to pay CA$15,000 (US$15,745) to a woman he taunted along with her same-sex partner during a show in a Vancouver restaurant three years ago, the Vancouver Sun reported Thursday.

Stand-up comedian Guy Earl was ordered to pay the money to Lorna Pardy, 32, while the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal also ordered the Vancouver restaurant owner, Salam Ishmail, to pay her $7,500.

Pardy said Earle directed homophobic and sexist insults at her when she was a patron, and he was the master of ceremonies at an open mic comedy show at the restaurant in 2007.

Earle said he will appeal the ruling and that all he did was insult audience members who insulted him first. He also denied that he said some of the things he has been accused of, said Pardy threw a drink in his face and argued that the tribunal had no jurisdiction to hear the case.

Tribunal member Murray Geiger-Adams said Earle repeated vulgar language in public and attacked Pardy's identity and dignity as a woman and a lesbian and ordered the payment for lost wages and for injury to dignity, feelings and self respect.

Whoa! "Injury to dignity, feelings and self respect"? Since when can't people be insulted? And since when is someone's sense of being insulted worth over $23,000 dollars?

Those crazy Philippinos are at it again:

DEVOTEES re-enacted Jesus's crucifixion in gory scenes while millions of other less extreme faithful across the Catholic Philippines prayed with their families on Good Friday.

A handful of people are traditionally nailed to crosses while hundreds more have their backs whipped until they bleed in Asia's major Catholic outpost, to remember the day when Christians believe Jesus Christ died 2,000 years ago.

In the small farming town of Cutud, a couple of hours' drive north of Manila, thousands of tourists gathered to watch what has over the years become the biggest and bloodiest Good Friday spectacle.

Fourteen people were nailed to crosses and hundreds were whipped as they walked through the town, their blood splattering onto the ground and walls of buildings.

The most senior of those nailed to a cross, Ruben Enaje, 50, said he was going through the ordeal this year for the 25th time as a way of giving thanks to God for allowing him to survive an accident unscathed.

"I will do this for as long as I can endure it," Enaje told reporters.

Texas Governor Rick Perry called on Texans to pray for rain as cooler temperatures on Thursday helped firefighters contain wildfires that have charred more than 1.5 million acres across the state.

Perry, a Republican, sought increased federal help in combating the blazes last weekend and urged Texans to ask the same from a higher power over the Easter holiday weekend.

"Throughout our history, both as a state and as individuals, Texans have been strengthened, assured and lifted up through prayer," Perry said in a statement.

Awww, The New Republic is wondering "Has The Green Movement Been A Miserable Flop?" To which I'll say, why yes. Yes it has, certainly:

After Barack Obama vaulted into the White House in 2008, it really did look like the United States was, at long last, going to do something about global warming. Scientists were united on the causes and perils of climate change. Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth had stoked public concern. Green groups in D.C. had rallied around a consensus solution—a cap-and-trade program for carbon emissions—and had garnered support from a few major companies like BP and Duke Energy. Instead, the climate push was … a total flop.

You can go and read why The New Republic thinks that's happened for yourselves, but it seems pretty obvious to me - starting with maybe, just maybe, the American people don't like being pushed around? This is great - one of my favorite NewAgers in the music biz, Lady Gaga, flipped out on the New Music Express about her latest song, Born This Way, which a lot of people happen to think sounds a lot like our other favorite NewAger in the music biz, Madonna. The Amplifier blog called GaGa's outburst "her very own version of the Five Stages of Grief!" except they added one stage I've never heard before:

Religious Pandering:

Now that's a great bit of logic there! But here's my question:

Is there ever going to be a NewAger who doesn't use their feelings ("Nothing more than feelings,...") as the ultimate justification for trying to get their way? (Or, in this case, attempting to change reality?) They need to try a new schtick, if you ask me, because their own feelings ain't cutting it. News to GaGa:

Love That Mother Nature: 100 percent of Earth Day stories were positive.

I have nothing against Earth Day in and of itself. While the politics of environmentalists are destructive, it’s not necessary to denigrate the efforts of individuals to help improve the environment through private and individual action. The problem with Earth Day is that it’s used as a platform to argue for statist “solutions” to environmental issues that will tend to keep people in poverty and create even more power for a small clique of elites at the top of government and big business.

A point I’ve made in other forums and repeat here is this: A sufficiently ruthless opponent would not defer to him but take any and every opportunity to discomfit him. What this, and similar episodes, shows is that he has never had to deal with a very public event, from which he cannot escape, in which he’s lost control and is being made to look bad. That thin veneer of cool would quickly melt. He doesn’t improvise well and doesn’t know when to stop digging: it’s tough when you believe deeply that you’re the smartest guy in the room. In fact, the person he least respects has the greatest opportunity here. Media mavens that run our so-called debates can be counted on to try to keep things predictable. Obama’s opponents should not accommodate that ruse.

They're going to keep crying "racism", of course, but it is, was, and always will be the arrogance of the man - his hubris - that loosed the hounds on him.

That, and his always having been wrong.

I Can't Close My Eyes/New Romantic Shit/80s

I'm having insomnia issues, and they're throwing my schedule all off (check out the time signatures on the previous posts). I don't need a whole lot of sleep, five hours tops usually, but when I find myself up at 6AM and I haven't made it to bed yet, it's pretty clear the next day is going to suck a little, probably with mental issues and a nap making everything screwy.

The difference, between the clock on the wall and my body clock, is very real.

"There is no use of a sleeping man, as there is not of a dead man. ... But whoever of us is most solicitous for living the true life, and for entertaining noble sentiments, will keep awake for as long time as possible."

I'll have all these brilliant ideas and then - *poof* - they're gone, so I've got to remember to write them down,...if I can remember to write 'em down. I've got brain farts, skips in time, and a need for constant backtracking. I'm being extra careful while driving. It's all very tiring. Not like drugs. No, it's nothing like drugs.

Not like the ones we were doing back then.

When I was young, in the '80s, I could stay up for days at a time - three or four, easy. Riding in cars filled with ants and empty fast food wrappers. Holes in my jeans. Cowboy boots - with spurs. I had to drink myself to sleep because I just wasn't going there. Sleep was for the dead, and it still is, compared to those of us who have work to be done. Creativity requires diligence. That guy or gal standing sentry on the fence. If you're not awake or aware, shit'll get past you.

Everybody's crashed out now.

The first show I did in the 80s, before anything had started for me, I did with a German named "Z-Snot". He had teeth that looked like Dresden after the bombing. (I'm probably going to lose mine early, so I'm one to talk.) We'd rehearsed this show for weeks, staying up for outrageous amounts of time, getting our moves down ("Alright, you do this and then I'ma do this, and then you reach under my arm,...there!") and coordinating 5 turntables with keyboards before we'd ever heard what MIDI was or anything. Then we finally got onstage and he forgot everything as soon as the music started, abandoning all that preparation for momentarily hogging the spotlight and acting out to the point of catastrophe. (You've only got a "show" when you're actually doing something, right right?) The crowd was polite until he fell off the stage, blinded by the lights and propelled by adrenaline. We went from cool to fools in minutes.

I never want to hear boos again.

Like kids today, I never imagined I'd grow up, or could become the person I'd be, writing this. I didn't even know what "divorced" meant, and definitely couldn't picture myself married. I guess I'm lucky to have never had kids. I lived for late nights, and music, and Johnny Rotten had already said there'd be "No Future" so who was I to doubt it? Getting both my ears pierced, with a red hot needle, was more important than getting older. It proved I'd endure. And I have.

Just not the way I thought.

Now I'm on some new and improved shit, shaking off everything that's ever held me. Including Punk, and old fucked-up friends, and apparently sleep. I'm working on music but it's coming from a whole different place, incorporating everything I've ever known, every style I've ever heard, all of it. I can't go wrong with music. I'm just as cocky as I've ever been. I know who I am. All I've got to do is stay alive.

But now, that's clearly easier said than done.

Next, one of his readers suggests a chiropractor - WRONG - before another one suggests the humble heating pad, which is a better investment, but not as good as simply telling her to stop sitting in chairs so much, which (like the final suggestion they get) doesn't cost a dime. Incredible.

Try "sitting" like in the photo, above, as much as possible. Avoid chairs. And, please, don't start doing yoga.
