Let me show you what I see:

"Although the CIA found scant evidence of collaboration between Iraq and Al Qaeda, the agency reported that it had long since established that Iraq had previously supported the notorious Abu Nidal terrorist organization, and had provided tens of millions of dollars and logistical support to Palestinian groups, including payments to the families of Palestinian suicide bombers."

According to (the first phase of) The Bush Doctrine, this - alone - is a justification for the Iraq War. Now I know, for most liberals, anything less than the weapons of mass destruction will do, but there were over 30 reasons for going in and any of them, in any configuration, will actually do.

Now let's look at the quotes:

"You can't distinguish between Al Qaeda and Saddam when you talk about the war on terror," President Bush said on September 25, 2002.

This could be read a number of ways, with the most cynical tying them together. But it's more reasonable to read it as it's intended: they're both terrorists and/or friends of terrorists. Hardly a smoking gun.

The next day, Rumsfeld said, "We have what we consider to be credible evidence that Al Qaeda leaders have sought contacts with Iraq who could help them acquire … weapons-of-mass-destruction capabilities."

Nothing much here either. We know they talked. We now know it didn't come to anything but so what? It's not a lie. Only someone playing "gotcha" - someone who, by choice, has decided not to give our public servants the benefit of the doubt and see them as demonic purveyors of war - would go there. I can't. They're human beings, and deserve our trust until they prove otherwise.

"We have never been able to prove that there was a connection to 9/11," Cheney said after the commission announced it could not find significant links between Al Qaeda and Iraq. But the vice president again pointed out the existence of a Czech intelligence service report that Atta and the Iraqi agent had met in Prague. "That's never been proved. But it's never been disproved," Cheney said.

All this says to me is Cheney's a hawk. More a bit paranoid, rather than disingenuous, and sees himself as the guy on the fence with a rifle, standing guard - and that's what I want. This is life or death and Al Qaeda did try to kill him on 9/11 with Flight 93. He's got the right and I'm proud of his leadership.

I won't go on, except to add Richard Armitage was the person who exposed Valerie Plame - not Scooter Libby - so this article is spreading a baseless lie. For the umpteenth time: you need to watch your sources.

But thanks for writing. The Crack Emceehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08366101526773588864noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1203082776419426855.post-33380941933040740622008-10-21T15:52:00.000-07:002008-10-21T15:52:00.000-07:00Good post. Though, if it comes to 'weasely nitpicking', then denying that Bush administration tried to link Saddam and al-Qaeda (actual adversaries)must count.

And the reason the Press won't (all) come out and blame the Democrats for the financial crash is because there is a complex range of reasons including the deregulation of the banks. Many of the reports I read say that, because the Dems have only had control of Congress for two of the last eight years, the blame must be shared. Perhaps some Card-equivalent journalist on the conservative side will address such comments as:

"Try and blame it on Clinton??!! That's ridiculous, the economy was stable then. There is nothing wrong with home ownership as long as it is within your means.

The loans that are defaulting were written from around 02-07 well after Clinton had left. The Republicans deregulated the banking and housing industry, allowed the 'credit default swaps' to be written as insurance on the bad mortgages, and then when the defaults came the banks who had written the swaps couldn't pay the claims (see Lehman Brothers and AIG)."

(won't be holding my breath)Berko Willshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03071651884274086458noreply@blogger.com
