If this doesn't convince you, nothing will. Certain people will use blacks for any purpose they see fit. That's what blacks are here for, right? To make conservatives feel moral, or to make liberals feel even more moral, and to "keep" blacks as pawns, or a prize, to be fought over - for someone else's attainment of the (white) high-ground - in the eyes of other whites, of course, not mine. Well, o Reality king, let me disavow you of that notion. Reasons people would, and did, vote for Obama:
1. Promise of universal healthcare
2. Intention to reverse policy on engagement with the Middle East
3. Banning torture and renditioning, and closing offshore internment camps. Ending imprisonment without trial.
4. [among serving military: just because he wasn't candidate McCain, who would not guarantee that the practice of stop-loss would cease if he were elected]
5. The desire for an articulate, inclusive, leader who would be capable of reaching out to other nations and forging alliances
6. A gaffe-prone run by Obama's opponent, and his contentious choice for running mate. Plus the considerable hurdle he had to distance himself for those who were disenchanted with Bush-Cheney model
7. An assessment, rightly or wrongly, that he would be the best candidate to reverse the deepening recession; create jobs and revive industry
Now I'm sure you have a list of ways in which President Obama has failed his mandate on every one of those issues - or, as with (3) you'll make a clumsy attempt at excusing barbarity when its committed by your own side - but the point remains, there are many reasons people voted for Obama.
It's just a guess, but the uneducated couple who answered a pollster with "ah, we're votin' for the nigger", would be unlikely to mark the historical importance of a black man coming to power. They must have had other reasons.
