Welcome: Whites Are Now Living In Cloud Cuckoo Land

"The ANC is a typical terrorist organization ... Anyone who thinks it is going to run the government in South Africa is living in cloud-cuckoo land."
- Margaret Thatcher

"Good riddance. She was a staunch supporter of the apartheid regime. She was part of the right-wing alliance with Ronald Reagan that led to a lot of avoidable deaths."
- The ANC's Pallo Jordan, upon news of Thatcher's passing

  1. In fairness the ANC was (like most every other group ever devised) not a block -- there were many factions within it. Some were free democrats, some socialists, some a bit of both, and some who were out and out stalinists -- and they were courted by everyone (some courted right back) -- and that included the likes of Arafat, Quaddafi, Assad, elements within the DDR, the USSR, and China as well as Britain, and Europe. In fact, I would be very surprised if the courting still isn't going on at the same fevered pitch, as things are far from completely settled in that country (although some things do look more promising than they did 20 years ago...and I think a certain president had a hand in some of that ;) ).

so, long of the short: nobody at that time really knew which way things were going to go -- in fact it didn't look like it would turn out as well as it did; that Mandela and some of the people within the ANC did manage to sidestep some of the minefields is to their credit (they did institute the notion of democratic elections, that was big) but this was not completely apparent in the '80s.
Not condoning the mistakes, just remarking that the Cold War created an environment where mistakes could easily be made (one of the reasons for Vietnam imhao).
