I'm more surprised than anyone, but I'm on a road trip (of sorts) with a Native American Navy buddy, and so, writing from an interesting place:
For many years, the freed slaves in this area farmed, traded, and sold their labor to others while living in this settlement. A church was built and a cemetery was provided for their loved ones.
Look at the photo, above, very closely:

Perhaps the U.S. needs to follow

LOL! You were in my neck of the woods, right across the border as it were -- it's an interesting area in a lot of ways, though the rest of the country largely ignores it.
