White people can't escape history, so trying to hide it with lies was always - and always will be - futile. It's not the crime, but the cover-up - you compound the problem - which was you made a problem, to begin with:

For Chester and Timothy Hurdle, the horrors of slavery are real -- sold away from your family as a child, whipped by your overseer, shot by a white mob.

It all happened to their father -- who told them and their older siblings about his experiences.

Timothy, 83, of San Francisco, and Chester, 75, of Sacramento are among the few living children of slaves. In the twilight of their lives, they are among dozens of descendants of slaves to file lawsuits seeking reparations.

Their multimillion-dollar suit, filed last month in federal and state courts in San Francisco, is special because the slave was their father, Andrew Jackson Hurdle -- not some distant ancestor. Only two other plaintiffs, including the Hurdles' sister in Illinois, are the children of slaves.

"Being a biological son of a slave, I thought it would be a good time to help our black people who were enslaved," said Chester Hurdle, a retired Air Force officer. "I've heard some people say that we no longer exist."
