If whites were serious, they'd find tons of ways to fix slavery's scars:

“It didn’t end with the emancipation of slaves. We were sharecroppers until 1992, so slavery didn’t end in 1865 for our family,” says William. “And the remnants, as we know, carried on. My mother is 83 and can remember working for a white family; raising their children and cooking for them. Yet when she went to a movie theatre with them she had to sit upstairs alone, because she wasn’t allowed to sit downstairs with the family.

“I cried when my father told me how he was treated as a person, and it was this which got me started into going back through the years and finding out about my family. It got me thinking about who they were and what they went through, and who I am as a result.

“For example I’m not really a Holland. My great-grandfather took the name Holland. People took the name of the plantation owners for whom they worked, or it related to their occupation.
