Homeopathy: Another Boring Topic With Women

We haven't blogged about Homeopathy in a long time, because - like environmentalism - it's boring, and just too trying to accept that anyone could fall for the whole "water is medicine" scam. But fall for it they do - and in the most expensive ways possible. Let's have Ben Goldacre explain what Homeopathy is, in case the cup in that woman's hand, above, isn't a good hint:
To recap: homeopathy pills don't work better than placebo dummy pills in trials. They are made by taking one drop of the original substance and diluting it in 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 drops of water, then taking one drop of that solution, which is now just water, and shaking it near some pills, which you then buy to treat an illness.
Got that? Good, because now you can guffaw along with the rest of us as we tell you:

San Francisco has erected a cathedral to it.

Why would anyone do that? We don't know (the people who are doing it can't even explain it,...)

But there's a newspaper in New Zealand that's suggesting selling water will be a great career path.

Unless you want to be regarded as an expert, then you get no love.

But don't lose heart:
The solutions to life's problems are so simple when one believes that homeopathy can fix everything. Apparently, homeopathy claims it can prevent life-altering problems like unemployment, homelessness (i thought homeopathic housing was homelessness!), addiction, rape, child sexual abuse, malnutrition (erm, don't they instead mean dehydration?) and it can even function as bulletproof armour. My mind boggles.
And so does ours, my friend, so does ours,...

Nothing Can Happen (Without A Helping Hand)

The NewAge naturopathic bullshit works every time:
"A Kiwi woman has told of her bizarre experience with a UK cult 'guru' jailed this week for rape, detailing how he danced around her bed and 'enlightened' her during an alleged sexual assault.

Michael Lyons*, also known as Mohan Singh, was jailed for 10 years after raping and sexually assaulting two female 'recruits' between 1998 and 2008.

The 52-year-old London man was acquitted of three further charges of rape, one involving the 23-year-old New Zealand woman on her OE in 2005.

She has written of her experience on a website for the Rick Ross Institute, an organisation which tracks and studies cults.

A second New Zealand woman also complained to police about Lyons. He was not charged in relation to the complaint but the woman gave evidence at his trial.

UK police said Lyons operated as a 'spiritual group leader' purporting to be a naturopath, skilled in osteopathy, acupuncture and nutrition."
Don't get me wrong:

Being a stupid enough liberal to believe in NewAge naturopathic bullshit is a great help, too.

*That is not Michael Lyons in the photo. A picture of him can be found here.

Some People Will Buy Any Cock-N-Bull Story

"Two glass vials purportedly containing the ghosts of two dead people sold for $2,830 New Zealand dollars ($1,983) at an auction that ended Monday night.

The 'ghosts' were put up for bidding by Avie Woodbury from the southern city of Christchurch. She said they were captured in her house and stored in glass vials with stoppers and dipped in holy water, which she says 'dulls the spirits' energy.'"

Another Kind Of Egg On Your Face, Twig Boy

"92% of users of homeopathic remedies think that the products work according to a survey published in the latest edition of the New Zealand Medical Journal. But only 6% of those surveyed knew that homeopathic remedies did not contain any active ingredient and most thought that homeopathic remedies were either moderately or very concentrated."

-- Dr. Shaun Holt, with the kind of news journalists should be all over - but ain't - so it's left to the New Zealand Doctor.

Then They Got In A Circle And Chanted "Obama"

"Several people,...leant over Janet, placed their mouths over her eye balls and tried to suck at her eyes in an attempt to remove the curse."

-- News.com, making us a little embarrassed to be sharing the designation of "human" with people who can be so stupid they'd kill a little girl over "spirits" and "curses", instead of reading News.com.
