TMR's Message To Millennials (Generation Y)

Over at Instapundit, Glenn Reynolds posted a moving e-mail by someone named Mckean Evans about the lousy image Millennials have garnered, and the equally-lousy situation the workforce's newest entrants find themselves in.

What was the result?

A bunch of Boomers writing more lousy shit about Millennials.

Not very helpful.

TMR, on the other hand, likes young folks - this blog was almost made to alert them to the worthlessness of the world view the last couple of generations have raised them in - so I'm going to do the right thing and, instead of dissing them further, give Millennials the kind of real world advice Instapundit's so-called smart set is too stuck-up to hand over.

Think about it: they have money.

They're not going to help you, and ain't getting out of the way.

Now, you may think, after a few paragraphs, that most of the stuff I'm saying has nothing to do with immediate employment, either - and you'd be right - but what it does have to do with is our country's major shift in time and resources - from frivolous wasteful bullshit back to a mentality, and an economy, that functions the way it's supposed to - basically, the idea is if you're not doing what you've been doing, you'll find other things to do, and other people to do it with.

We're out here, we're just waiting for you to join us.

O.K. - here goes - in no particular order, just a bunch of stuff that comes to me:

Kids, you've got an education. You didn't get it for nothing. Now is the time to use it.

But be practical.

Become critical thinkers.

And don't let anyone tell you different.

Band together and ask yourselves:

How much money do we collectively have, and what can we do, what can we create, what do we already have to use, to make more? Take jobs from your parents or your parent's friends. Do manual labor. Mow lawns. Offer to paint houses cheap. Spruce up people's surroundings. Take jobs away from the illegals.

As a matter of fact, make it impossible for them to find work.

When I say "band together", I don't mean starting another fucking cult. (As a matter of fact, turn on cults and cultists wherever you find them - they're con artists.) What I mean is, get away from thinking of yourselves as rebels, or held-down minorities, or whatever, and start thinking of yourselves as Americans - the biggest, proudest, and most productive group this country possesses.

You'd be surprised how many doors that simple trick of the mind can open.

Yes, fuck Burning Man and every message it's ever delivered. Fuck Oprah. Fuck motivational speakers. Fuck gurus. Fuck Raves. Fuck 'em all.

Fuck Obama & Co..

As a matter of fact, resist Obama & Co.'s every move.

Stop thinking about the previous generation's stupid cult shit:

Forget about yoga, forget about recycling. Forget about "saving the planet".

Forget about fighting racism, forget about being "progressive", forget about the opposite sex, forget about your health - forget about all that shit - focus instead on one fucking thing:

Being productive.

Haven't you noticed all of the hard-working folks out there who are "rocking a gut"? Do you know why?

Because they don't care how they look, and hard work takes energy - all kinds of energy. The computer industry was built on ideas - but also by burning the lights all night (not very "green" or energy efficient) subsisting on pizza and coke (definitely not health-conscience) and not giving a damn if you worked so long you fell asleep in front of your keyboard, or your face broke out, or your skin got pale.

You feel me?

You're young - you can be healthy later.

And whatever big time liberal celebrities tell you to do - do the opposite. Cover up your tatoos. Vote Republican, because they want to put you back to work. Listen to Rush Limbaugh, because he believes in you and this country more than almost anyone that's easily accessible today.

Don't go to the movies - because that's money and time you can use elsewhere - and they're indoctrinating you with self-defeating nonsense anyway. Listen to a better class of music. Buy cheap used cars. Stop shopping for over-priced organic garbage and pissing away your money at Whole Foods. As a matter of fact, if you're going to protest anything, protest them wasting your time and money.

Focus your mind on being innovative and looking for real opportunities. What does that mean? Let me tell you a story:

Early one morning, as I was eating breakfast, the power went out in San Francisco and I watched lines forming at the bus stop across the street from my apartment in the Haight, filled with people who needed to get to work. (The buses run on electricity.) Did I just sit and watch them suffer? Hell no! I got up, got dressed, and instantly turned my beat up car into a taxi service, squeezing as many people in as I could - for $10.00 a pop. I dropped them all off at a central location downtown and kept returning for more even after the power came back on - shit, I was faster than the Muni system!

By the time I had finished, I had about $300.00 in my pocket before I had to get to work myself.

And do you know why? Because I wasn't stuck-up (I was quite famous by then) there was no work that was below me, and I was more-than-willing to go all out.

You must be, too.

Remember what Martin Luther King said:

"All work has dignity."

And now it's your time - and your turn - to rebuild this country right. Rebuilding it for yourselves

I'm hoping, at least a little bit, telling you this might be the beginning of the young of this nation getting their heads on straight. Let me know if it does. I can speak more on it. If you want.

One way to let me know is, of course, you might consider making a (small) donation. That's how capitalism works.

In the world of blogging, anyway.

Get the picture?

  1. Wish I could send this link to my daughter.

Her most recent drama is keeping me up tonight. I've got a letter set to go, which she isn't going to like, and I expect that she's not going to believe I'm being honest about it being *about* her pulling her head out and putting a job and self-sufficiency ahead of her dreadlocks. (Yes, I'm as Norse as my photo and the poster of Thor and it took her years of sustained effort for her to get her hair to snarl in such an interesting way.)

But... can't sleep. Sometimes being a parent sucks. It's impossible to be detached.

But the millennials, once they get their heads out, will be a force of nature, I think, and unstoppable.

  3. Crack it is fun to read your twists, turns and contradictions. I agree with your basic assumption that as Americans we should become productive and skeptical of politicians including Republicans. But just being productive ignores that folks need to pool money and talent to produce things—even as terrible as Whole Foods, which provides money for small hard working organic farmers who produce food. And sometimes your rant takes a strange turn as you tells us to fuck motivational speakers, all the while teasing us with your own motivational twirl. Other times you seem blind to how it works as you hold up Rush as a person who wants to put us back to work, when it is Ed Schultz who features and promotes small entrepreneurs like yourself.

    Fancy that!

    Well done.

  5. Hey - I got quoted here! Imagine my surprise - I laughed, I cried. Okay, I didn't cry, but I am still smiling. I almost didn't post that comment on Dr. Helen's blog because it was way off topic, and now I am just under the title at TMR. Is this a great country or what?

This advice is virtually useless to the millions of unemployed college graduates with non-dischargable, recently-nationalized student loan debt.

That kind of work doesn't leave enough money to live off of after the government garnishes their cut of your gross income, and it'll only get worse as the various new healthcare costs kick in. Those of us trying to start our own businesses run up against the brick wall of banks being paid to not lend us money (thanks, Fed!) - if our post student-loan credit even allows us to ask in the first place.

Glenn's letter writer has it right.. we worked our butts of getting into school and getting into debt, just like you told us to. You congratulate us by changing the rules and telling us to pick up your tab.

We are not going to furiously spin on a hamster wheel our entire lives, earning less than minimum wage, to shore up your medicare and social security benefits.

Generation Y will have a return message for you sooner or later, but I don't think you're going to like it much.

  7. By some coincidence, I was listening to "Those Who Tell The Truth.." when finishing up reading this. I am not sure "Greet Death" matches the spirit of this post, though. :)

  8. Nice threats coming from the millennial group. Let's see if you have the true grit first.
Hand outs, a way of life that is nothing but screwed.
It's not like you have anyone to blame but yourselves for not doing the critical thinking needed to cover your own butts.
You're fubar'd if you think you're going to eat the boomers.

  9. All I gotta say is this:

Gen X told you not to trust the Boomers, that they'll sell you out so fast it will make your head spin.

    ReplyDelete
  10. "we worked our butts of getting into school and getting into debt, just like you told us to."

Yup. Well, I didn't tell you anything of the sort; I'm not a Boomer, either. But I saw their BS for what it is. Why didn't you?

The question is, will you learn from this? And what?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Addendum: yeah, I am one of those Xers who didn't trust the Boomers.

It's hard to respect those in Gen Y who trusted the Boomers and voted -- not, CHEERED -- for an obvious charlatan for President.

Good luck. This I'll say: don't look for Gen X to help you out. We didn't have it any easier. I dug holes for a while, after getting my Bachelor's degrees.

Sorry about those student loans. But you know, I paid off debts, too... It sucked, but life isn't always a bowl of cherry-flavored vodka, you know.

  12. Anonymous is right. CMC's wasting his breath. His kind of advice is wasted on anyone who's out of college and still blaming Mommie and Daddy for his problems. Folks like Anon will never pull up their socks and face the fact that their own little egos were heartily complicit in acquiring useless degrees and crippling debt. They were blind, greedy marks for second- and third-rate schools that cater to families with more money than brains and a sense of entitlement. They all somehow believed that getting through a few course reading lists would bestow the keys to professional success.

My own kids both elected to do engineering at state schools after being accepted at Ivies. They're both earning good livings. They both got the balance of the tuition money we'd saved and will use it for house down payments or grad school if their employers won't spring. My conscience is clear.

Anon, run along and blame your own parents for screwing you up, if you're not man enough to take responsibility for your situation. As far as I'm concerned, you're somone else's problem.

  13. Thanks to everyone for writing - including the dissenters:

Now I know to do a follow-up post.

Stay tuned - and hit the tip jar, losers.

  14. Wow! I needed that. And I'm a boomer.

  15. Nice rant, but ... 'don't follow cults and don't spend your money, but follow what I say and send me money'.

Hmmm, hypocrite? Most liberals I know are hypocrites, btw...

  17. Hey whiney anon!

You are the problem. SHUT UP, just get a JOB, get 2 jobs, get 3 jobs. Start a fricken company. Join the Army. Be a man and take care of yourself, its not your parents job, nor mine.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hey Millennials - for those of you that actually have a job, please stop being such whiney little children. You know that they brought in a "workplace psychologist" to teach us how to deal with the "most praised generation"? Now I'm not saying that we Xers don't have our own issues - clearly we do - but when we hit the professional workplace, we adapted to the rules as set down by the Boomers, Silents and Greatests ahead of us - that was just the deal.

You want to work in a high-stress, highly-compensated job, please put away your Binky and blanket, roll up your sleeves and get to work. For every one of you we hired, there are five more who would love to do your job - sadly they are all probably as lame as you are, but remember you are utterly replaceable. I'm sorry that the concept of a "crucible" is foreign to you, but I do not want to hear about how much you miss your girlfriend or boyfriend, how tired you are or how you don't get enough positive feedback. I'm still at my desk working away, so what makes you think you can go home? And if you do another document dump and dash on me, I will break you on the wheel.

    Buy cheap used cars.

    Best advice yet.

    Also:

Men: Date down, or sideways, never "up".

    Women: Learn to cook.

Men: Hookers are cheaper; lower maintenance. (I'm only 1/10 joking.)

Women: T-Shirt, shorts, NASCAR. (No makeup)

Men: NEVER patronize Starbucks, Panera Bread, or Bloomingdales.

    Women: Eat less. (Fat)

Men: Avoid marine biologists, plastic boobs.

    Women: Turn off your TV.

Men: If she has a cat, that's her soul-mate.

Women: Listen to your girlfriends, dump him.

White Men: Minority females (any) are better. At E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G.

White Women: Stay out of the self-help isle.

    ...

    Who is this "you" kimosabe?

    I know it wasn't Crack.

You listened to that other "you" last time.

Maybe you should listen to a different "you" from now on.

The simple fact that you don't see any value at all in creatively finding and taking any sort of labor, any sort of work, for any pay, means that "you" need the advice more than anyone does.

It's not your student loans, it's your attitude.

    You were lied to.

Who should you be mad at? The people who lied or the ones who are telling you the truth?

  22. I'm trying to kick start 2 very small ventures. It's hard finding people who will work hard. Most people want easy money only. As soon as Gen Y admits to itself that it's the most spoiled Gen, they will be fine.

PS: when I was 12, they said sex is good, drugs are good, money is bad. Then I hit 13 and it was sex is bad, say no to drugs, and greed is good. Never listen to Boomers evah!
