This is D.D. Palmer, the father of chiropractic and a fanatical quack, who shouldn't have been allowed to touch anyone. Attendance at the Palmer School of Chiropractic was forbidden to blacks.

This is Harvey Lillard, the black janitor in Palmer's building, and the first chiropractic patient. Palmer claimed he cured Lillard's deafness using chiropractic techniques. Lilliard agreed, though, under Jim Crow, no one is sure if he was allowed to disagree - if he wanted to keep his job. Regardless - whether the story was confirmed by the supposedly-trained "Physician" or his layman black janitor under duress - neither man was aware the nerve for hearing is NOT located in the spine.

And a business was born.

Whoa - I had no idea there was once a book called "Bonesetting, Chiropractic, and Cultism" - but (once again proving ignorance isn't bliss) I guess there was:

Palmer, the founder of chiropractic, who claimed that he had cured deafness and heart disease by adjusting a thoracic vertebra.

So get that: the founder, developer, and school, all disagreed on what they were supposed to be experts on, and people bought it. Still buy it. Who says otherwise?
