As we watch - and even celebrate - the destruction of Lance Armstrong over steroids, this one's worth a gander. It'll make you think. It made me think. I still don't like Lance, or Arnold, or Sly, or Barry, or Jose Conseco - but I do like thinking - and this surprisingly sensitive and fair film will stimulate some:
If nothing else, I'm glad I got smart to this form of masculinity before I fully dedicated myself to it.
A Big Thumbs Up - especially for the whole thing being presented online,...
Needless to say, with this head cold, that didn't work out. Though I did raise a smile when my supervisor (female) asked if I was wearing a painter's mask because I was sick - I told her no, it was simply becoming too damned obvious my good looks were interfering with her work performance. Whoo-boy, what a card! (Who says I'm not fun-loving?)
I also got great reviews for my job commitment, I'm happy to say.
So what's going on out there? Kind of a mixed bag:
Arnold Schwarzenegger finally admitted he admired Hitler, which got me to thinking A) it is really difficult for most people to own up to their bullshit - he said he loved Der Fuhrer back in 1975 - and B) is it any wonder, as often as I've made the NewAge/Nazi connection, California's culture elected Arnie to office? It was like flies to honey.
Well, actually more like flies to flies, but whatever.
Even Ann Althouse has gotten in on the conspiracy theory game, and - considering she and Sullivan are part of Glenn Reynolds' circle - that should tell you what kind of "thinking" our most elite bloggers are marinating in during this election.
It's completely bonkers - not just that they'll go there, but that anyone would respect their opinion after they do so.
"There’s an instrumental argument that folks on the right need to take this into account, but beyond that, I confess I don’t much care."
Come on - who should be the "thought leader" here?
Of course, this sudden diminishment of mental capacity is based solely on the fact this is an election year and - despite the Right's post-debate big talk - both sides are clearly desperate.
Right now the conservatives appear happily delusional - forgetting it's just a matter of time before Romney receives another message from the planet "Kolob" - while the Dems are coming to terms with the idea of unloading on the American people what it means to elect a Mormon.
Tonight, FRONTLINE has a documentary on the candidates that Businessweek says "views Romney as a shape- shifting businessman" who "rarely spoke of his great-grandfather’s five wives and 30 children." Naturally:
Considering regular Republicans started the nomination process with "Anyone But Mitt," Romney probably wouldn't want to give away the nature of his main voting block so soon,…
(We always thought the gates to evil were J.K. Rowling's "special girl spots",...)
Both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Al Gore have major environmental regrets. Unfortunately, being idiots isn't one of them.
And there's still no word on when we're getting back the money they've wasted. We know Al's got a lot of it.
Somebody ought to start demanding it.
It's about time: "The Northern Territory Department of Health has warned the Church of Scientology not to give people medical advice on how to detox from drugs and alcohol."
Great. Now if we can only save John Travolta from himself we'll be all good.
In court papers filed Friday, a former high ranking officer of NXIVM depicts the cultlike group as a self-help and ethics school that is secretly a place for its leader to explore opportunities for sex and gambling money.
Susan Dones, a trainer who ran the Colonie-based company's former Tacoma, Wash., center, told a bankruptcy court last week that Keith A. Raniere, the creator of the teachings used in NXIVM's self-improvement courses, may have motives beyond the education of human potential.
Dones said NXIVM presents Raniere "as the most honest, ethical, Nobel (sic), man who had the answers to mankind's problems" yet his training sessions are "used as a venue to stalk their students ... who might fit into Raniere's profile of sexual conquest and who might be willing to 'give' Raniere money to feed his gambling problem."
Raniere, who uses the name "Vanguard," and NXIVM President Nancy Salzman, Dones claimed, acted maliciously toward members who were "sold on Raniere being someone he is not and that NXIVM 'mission' is something it is not."
"I was informed and believe that Raniere/Vanguard was having sexual relationships with multiple women, sometimes with more than one of them at the same time (many of these women were told that they were the chosen one; several of them were members of NXIVM's executive board which is a per se conflict of interest and all them had to keep their relationship with Raniere a secret from the NXIVM community because it was feared that many members were not 'evolved enough' to be able to deal with this information)," Dones stated in her court declaration.
Ahh, yes, women:
Where would all these cults and frauds be without them?
Both California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his challenger for the office, Meg Whitman, think "California can dig itself out of its budget hole" by focusing on fraud.
Considering TMR has been beating that drum for about 5 years, we can't help but agree, but why stop with fraud in government? Considering all the bogus astrologers, psychics, and "healers" working over the general public (along with places like Whole Foods selling homeopathic "medicines" and the bogus claims on Oprah) it would seem like attacking fraud - wherever it exists - would be a much better idea, if straightening out society - or society's finances - is the goal.
Next up - file this one under "Everything Happens For A Reason":
Mike Edwards, the Electric Light Orchestra's original cellist - the guy who left that great band so he could change his name into some indian-sounding gibberish and become a Buddhist - has been killed by a bale of hay in what some are calling a freak accident. (The freak was killed in the accident, anyway.) Appreciative donations - for the bale of hay - can be sent directly to TMR.
And yet another Scientologist - this time, the guy who promoted Dianetics for the cult - has written a tell-all book that, of course, none of the authorities can use as evidence to finally rid us of L. Ron Hubbard's nonsense.
"So the environmentalists . . . are confused because they want to have renewable energy but then when it comes to the permitting process, creating that renewable energy and building the solar plants, they are then in the way. And they then talk about, 'You cannot go and destroy this squirrel.'
I say, 'What squirrel? I was out there, I didn't see a squirrel.'
They say, 'Well, there could be a squirrel coming very soon.'
So I say, 'But there's no squirrel there right now.'
'But you've got to protect things that could be there.'"
-- Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor of California, on the insanity of dealing with environmentalists - while he's working on their pet projects - which makes the whole enterprise insane, to him, me, and The Wall Street Journal.
