One Thought (And Two Quotes To Make You Think)

It's bizarre, how lawyers and so forth are blogging online, without mentioning Judge Joe Brown.
"The rapid Progress true Science now makes, occasions my Regretting sometimes that I was born so soon. It is impossible to imagine the Height to which may be carried in a 1000 Years the Power of Man over Matter. We may perhaps learn to deprive large Masses of their Gravity & give them absolute Levity, for the sake of easy Transport. Agriculture may diminish its Labour & double its Produce. All Diseases may by sure means be prevented or cured, not excepting even that of Old Age, and our Lives lengthened at pleasure even beyond the antediluvian Standard. O that moral Science were in as fair a Way of Improvement, that Men would cease to be Wolves to one another, and that human Beings would at length learn what they now improperly call Humanity,..."
The sleep of reason brings forth monsters, and the past two decades have produced monsters galore. Some are manifestly sinister, others seem merely comical---harmless fun, as Nancy Reagan said of her husband’s reliance on astrology. Cumulatively, however, the proliferation of obscurantist bunkum and the assault on reason are a menace to civilization,..."

Today Show - Good Job (But Not Good Enough)

We're so glad to see the The Today Show (and The New Yorker) tackling the Scientology investigation by the FBI - not only because the investigation's happening and, because of award-winning film director, Paul Haggis, is getting publicity - but because, for instance, this television interview offers us an opportunity to speak intelligently on a subject we, by now, tend to goof on because (since so few seem to care who NewAge hurts) there's nothing left to do sometimes but have some fun with it. Well, for this post, fun time is over:

The most important quote is from Paul Haggis himself, stating, "I was in a cult for thirty-four years. Everyone else could see it. I don't know why I couldn't." We say it's the most important because, A) it's the only time the word "cult" - not "church" - is mentioned, and B) it goes to Matt Lauer's repeated questioning of how a supposedly-smart person could get caught up in a cult in the first place, a question the New Yorker's reporter can't sufficiently answer - nor Haggis. That's easy, though probably difficult for someone to admit:

These folks (actors, politicians, and the like) are creative, which is one thing, but not nearly as smart - something totally different - as they think.

Put another way, clever don't equal brilliant, folks. Remember our homeopathy guy, saying he got into it because he's an "idiot"? That's the truth. And only when one can admit it are they approaching real knowledge about themselves. Think of other NewAge cultists we're familiar with:

Madonna trying to convince politicians to put Kabbalah water in nuclear reactors. Was that smart?

Gwyneth Paltrow's repeated forays into handing out insane received wisdom on health. Does that reveal she's smart? Or that her nickname, "Goop" is a more accurate description of her mental processes than she'd like to admit?

NewAge Punch Line, Jim Carrey, falling for Andrew Wakefield's quackery, and hooking up with Jenny McCarthy to fight childhood vaccinations. Highly intelligent, right?

It's unfortunate that Matt Lauer couldn't get someone familiar with cults to be on the program, since they would be able to explain how flattering it is for these already-special members of society (who, deep down inside, probably already thought of of themselves as smart since they're famous) to think they know something others don't - a fact Haggis hints at, when he says he didn't get out of it what he thought he would, which we read as he's learned a Scientologist is not much different than the rest of us after all. No special powers, or insights, to be had there.

Just decades of convoluted garbage that Haggis learned to master, until he understood that being called an "Operating Thetan VII" is all the reward he's going to receive for entering the Seventh Circle of Hell.

Another reason these "smart" lightweights get caught up in NewAge is,...what's to stop them? We live in a NewAge cult-saturated world, where Oprah peddles this crap to the masses (now on an entire network) and few ever say she's full of it. (The insistence that we should be "non-judgmental", a NewAge tenet, is almost accepted as a law in certain parts of the country.) Instead - more flattery - we celebrate her success at it with Kennedy Center honors and dinners at the White House - with Paul McCartney, the man who brought us the fraud of the Maharishi. That's a long way from laughing at Nancy Reagan for talking to a psychic, huh? Hillary Clinton, who also was talking to a psychic in the White House, is now Secretary of State, though, for the life of us, we don't understand how or why. Maybe it has something to do with her husband - a former president - being in cahoots with NewAge cult leaders Tony Robbins and Ken Wilber. We really don't know.

We do know Barack Obama is in the White House, partially, because of Oprah and the cult of NewAge's support.

To be cont'd.

All The World's A (NewAge) Stage

Hoo-boy, right out the box, Barry delivers TMR Gold:

At his very first press conference, Barack Obama was asked if he had talked to any "former Presidents", and his answer was that he had talked to "all the former Presidents, that are living,..." Then, in order to cover for that bizarre gaffe, he compounded it by saying, "I didn’t want to get into a Nancy Reagan thing about doing any séances." Doh!

For the record, it was Hillary Clinton who did the séance, using supposed psychic Jean Houston to "channel" FDR's wife. (A NewAge belief that certainly confirmed she was "the most qualified" person to be POTUS.) Former First Lady Nancy Reagan consulted an astrologer after Reagan was shot.

Still no word on where Obama stands on all the cultishly NewAge tomfoolery (possible ambassador) Oprah Winfrey is notorious for believing in. I'm sure he'll get around to that at his next press conference.

UPDATE: The question, from the reporter, was has Obama spoken to any "former presidents who are alive", which is dumb, so it would make some sense for him to answer as he did, but he still didn't have to go there. He's supposed to be "smart", y'know?

It's situations like this when you know there's only one place to be - only one place that has an expert on the mixture of politics and the metaphysical - and that place is your friendly neighborhood:

I Told You: Gavin Newsom - NewAge Cultist

Author, spiritual healer and "intuitive consultant" Simone, who presided over the weekend wedding of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and actress Jennifer Siebel, is predicting a very bright future for the city's first couple.

Although Simone (who long ago professionally dispensed with her first name, Carol) says her psychic readings days are largely behind her, she has come up with a few predictions:

On Newsom becoming governor: "I get a very positive energy about that. It's clear this is something he would like to do and he has a very strong personality, and I feel he'll get it."

On Newsom and Siebel having kids: "Definitely."

And on the chances of Newsom landing someday on a national ticket?

"It's all up to him. The work he accomplishes within himself will determine how far he goes," Simone said.

The onetime Silicon Valley ad executive, radio host and author of "The Goddess of 5th Avenue" has spent more than two decades exploring the metaphysical.

These days, she's affiliated with the Palo Alto School of Hypnotherapy where, according to her Web bio, she "helps people rekindle their inner light and strengthen the ability to respond creatively to life."

"I used to do (psychic) readings, astrology, numerology and all the metaphysical arts, but now I'm more interested in helping people quiet the mind," she tells us.

Simone says she was introduced to Gavin by Stanlee Gatti, their mutual friend, socialite wedding planner and fellow spiritual devotee.

That led to Simone sitting down with the mayor and his fiancee at Newsom's San Francisco penthouse a couple of months back to "talk about his internal life and where he's at," and to plan the couple's vows.

"Gavin wanted something less traditional and very contemporary," Simone said. The upshot was a ceremony that invoked nature and the Indian tribes that inhabited the Montana region where the couple tied the knot.

"I alluded to them in the ceremony as an eagle and a dove, and how they have to fly high and stay focused on each other because they are traveling all the time ... and being pulled apart by the world," Simone said.

And you thought Nancy Reagan's astrologer had the corner on political metaphysics.
-- Phillip Matier and Andrew Ross, confirming what I've said all along: the San Francisco mayor, Gavin Newsom, is a lying, crazy, asshole NewAger - and "reporters" of today don't practice journalism - though they're on the SFGate.
