I'm O.K. - You're O.K. (O.K., You're Not O.K.,...)

A quick question after glancing at Drudge

If almost 1,000 doomsday cult members have been arrested in China - and it's Drudge, and the BBC, who are calling them cultists - why don't we identify the fearful 'end of the world' callers flooding NASA or the folks gathering in Australia, Mexico, France, or Serbia, by the same title?

I swear, if I wasn't so gosh darn happy right now, I'd be getting pretty pissed about it,…

  1. Although I could cheer people wanting to overthrow communism, it really would be nice if they did it for actual reasons like maybe disgust at the ineffective, cruel, and just as delusional ideas about good government, or corrupt party apparatchiks living like royalty while the people live in misery, or the brutal machinations of the police state...but no, no...the world can't get that lucky.

Glad to hear you're in a happy frame of mind -- it's always a nice place to be, especially after so much crap.

  2. Cultist, fools, idiots...take your pick.

But you do not see the vast majority of people really paying attention do you? They are busy getting ready for Christmas, working, doing what they normally do this time of year.

Glad to hear you are in a happy frame of mind.

  3. I've been of the opinion for a very long time (since I was in my 20s, so a long damn time) that those in the vast majority doing the Christmas shopping are engaged in their own brand of delusion -- as though Christmas was supposed to be about what they are engaging in or that (most significantly) by going through these rituals they will somehow procure the thing they have been told they want (just watch one of those jewelry or toy commercials out now, or a Martha Stewart holiday entertainment episode, and it gives a good overview).

Or the well to do going to the soup kitchens to help out (perhaps even to donate some used stuff) on this one time a year -- like how the nobles of Europe used to go in a hairshirt on Whitsuntide after giving the peasants the day off to absolves themselves from their sins and prove how generous and humble they were.

It's a cargo cult calling another cargo cult a cult...imhao.

  4. PW, after a short visit to the mall the other day, I would agree with you! I better go reread A Christmas Carol, or The Grinich.

  5. Or watch "A Christmas Story" -- hilarious movie and great send up of the entire thing (while lovingly treating the characters, who are basically good people ;) ).
