Tin Foil Hats? Nice Accessories (But Never Fashionable)

Yesterday I wrote, "Privacy and the NSA wouldn't be a problem if the Right Wing had some common sense". This, after avoiding the issue since it began. Today, John Fund has a column that opens with:
“It’s time to ask tough questions about the National Security Agency’s surveillance activities — even for conservatives who have given the NSA the benefit of every doubt up until now.”

You can read the rest for yourself, because I'm interested in telling you what I object to - though I wouldn't say I give this government anything - even after reading John Fund:

From Day One, there's been a kind of hysterical shock and anger that a program even exists, which has struck me as so immature I'm not surprised anyone involved would be reluctant to deal with the accusers.

The issue of the NSA has appeared to be a continuation of the election year "battle", with various groups still trying to score political points irregardless of substance, and to our detriment as a nation.

It's been conducted in the same unhelpful "gotcha" conspiracy theory-style U.F.O. hunters use - always built on the accusation, not only that something's hidden, but there's something to hide. That people, or agencies, make mistakes - though they complain about that fact daily - is swept aside.

While I understand why those who've set their own hair on fire don't see it this way, most of what they've "discovered" looks pretty routine, hardly what I'd expect from a huge agency working in the shadows with an increasing amount of data for the first time.

There's what - 300+ million people in the United States? And in 2012 they found 2,776 violations of privacy rules. Yawn. What kind of violations aren't mentioned, fueling the conspiracy theorists, who will gladly trade on what isn't known as though it has the same weight as truth. Like the characters you find at Roswell, N.M., the idea they could be mistaken in their framing of issues, innocently or otherwise, is a subject they haven't devoted equal attention to, before or after this event, and they wouldn't welcome it. Whether it's Satan-worshipping Day Care centers, or the government is out to get you, these Americans do love their hysterias.

What they hate is anybody should burst their bubble - or ruin their "fun",...

And (If They Go With The "Soap" Idea) I'll Play Benson,...

Today, Ann Althouse made two comments on a post that were just too *RIPE* to pass up - first came this one (emphasis mine):

Remember, Meade and I need to do some road trips for your entertainment, and it's a big deal to do that customized Sprinter to suit the sensitivities of an old lady professor-blogger.

And then came this one:

We had a fantasy of being more like Clarence Thomas and his wife, traveling about.

I pictured some reverse sitcom credits - "with Clarence Thomas as Meade" - and died laughing, though Meade as Clarence Thomas would be just as funny:

"My grandfather beat me,..."

Ann and Meade are off, in their own little vacuum-sealed-with-money existence (a Sprinter? Really?) so I wouldn't go trying to cross-reference it with the reality of Walmart, that CT and Jenny enjoy, too quickly. If anything, I'd say Ann and Meade ought to start off slow - like with whatever they'd consider a cheap air mattress in the backyard - and then try working their way down. Real Americans will laugh at them otherwise.

So what can Ann and Meade do, instead, or until they're ready?

Well - since my enjoyment is such a major concern of theirs - here are Crack's Top Ten Suggestions For What Meadhouse Can Do To Keep Me Entertained:

10) Meade can start showing up to Wisconsin protests in obnoxiously colorful sweaters because he and Ann have re-imagined themselves as the Huxtables.

9) Meade as Marian Berry ("The bitch set me up!")

8) Blackface: Meade's Obama, Ann's Michelle,...wait - that's not much of a stretch,...

7) They buy the Sprinter, and the two of them criss-cross the country, recreating scenes from the Vietnam War's My Lai Massacre. (Extra credit if they make a special stop at "Roswell.")

6) They do whatever they see on an old episode of MTV's "Pimp My Ride" - complete with hydraulics - THEN they go visit the RV campgrounds.

5) Meade is Anthony Hopkins. Ann is Jodie Foster. This is Silence Of The Lambs. Action!

4) Three words: The Beverly Hillbillies.

3) Billarry or "Soap" - pick one. Ann and Meade may interpret them as they like.

2) Since they both like Mitt so much - strap a dog to the roof of anything and just GO!

And Crack's Number One Suggestion For What Meadhouse Can Do To Keep Me Entertained:

1) Tell everybody they're going to see Mayan temples - but they really visit all the Mormon ones!

Paul Krugman's Roswell/Area 51 Plan To Save Us All

Paul Krugman, The New York Times' eccentric economist, is the talk of the blogosphere today - mainly because of a critique of his new book that drifts into a dissection of his particular form of madness - with this moment alongside Bill Maher figuring prominently. Fortunately, Krugman's delusional idea also fits comfortably into the theme of this blog, being NewAge in nature and because he's discussing fooling the public to achieve his liberal designs, so I just had to post it.

Hell, it would've been a dereliction of duty if I hadn't - a really serious breach - and we can't have that on Memorial Day, can we?

Anyhoo, how an idiot like this keeps a job, and even gets on T.V. - especially after being an adviser to Enron - I don't know (and I'll leave for another time) but I guess, if nothing else, his entertainment value must be worth something. Mind you, probably not as much as he's making, but,...something.

Huh.

That's an interesting question, probably, for real comedians - as opposed to those just at the NYT

How much is always being wrong worth anyway?

We've Got Another Movie: Gawd Bless America

$100,000 is hardly chump change. But 70-year-old Leroy Tessina, a former delivery man, estimates that's the amount of money he's spent on psychics, UFO paraphernalia and other paranormal pursuits over the past few decades. He nearly lost his house in the process.

Among his purchases: several trips to UFO-friendly Roswell, N.M., countless books on extraterrestrials, nearly a decade's worth of sessions with a personal psychic and even a special helmet that supposedly prevents aliens from reading his mind.

But Tessina, a Los Angeles man, said he's a believer no more.
After a mind-bending, life-changing journey with independent filmmaker Blake Freeman, Tessina said he's "reformed" and won't pay peddlers of the paranormal any longer.

"I was into sci-fi as a child and young man and I guess it just evolved from that. I let it rule my life," he said. "Blake told me, 'You screwed up for a while, but now let's go see if we can straighten you out.'

"He showed me the error of my ways, so to speak."

In 2008, the thirtysomething Freeman and the then-sixtysomething Tessina went off on a cross-country adventure to interview so-called experts on alien abductions, ghost hunting, crop circles, psychic healing and more, all in an effort to expose the truth behind their wild, other-worldly claims.
The result is "Gawd Bless America," a documentary opening in theaters March 4, that blends "Borat"-like antics with "Religulous"-like irreverence to reach, Freeman said, something "real."

Where was this Blake guy when I was married?

TMR NewAge News (For The Indiscriminate Fool)

"The CIA has issued a statement after last week’s catastrophic waterboard incident in Guantanamo that embarrassed the agency and raised questions about security.

The events unfolded as a suspected terrorist was being interrogated and the session went on for nearly four hours. According to sources, the suspect 'seemed to enjoy it' and at one point nearly fell asleep.

An investigation revealed the water had been inadvertently stored next to a photograph of Valium and aspirin, and had apparently retained that memory. The origin of the photo is unknown, and calls to
NewAge World Headquarters in the Sedona suburb of Circle Rock, AZ went unanswered. A spokesperson in the Roswell, NM office declined comment.

In a brief statement, the detainee told reporters he felt relaxed, pain-free and 'very clean.'

The water has been checked into a rehab program."

-- Joseph Nigro, on a "terrible" situation, only made better by the hilarity of it (with the following video) as The Macho Response.
