Recently reunited Detroit trailblazers Death have often been identified as trailblazers for the music that would come to be called punk. The thing is, though, they never made a record and hardly played out of Detroit, and it seems like a remarkable coincidence that a Xerox of their sound would magically arise in New York City a couple of years after their decline. It seems an even more remarkable coincidence when you discover that they recorded a demo tape that did the rounds of NYC-based record companies, who may well have seen the potential in the music, but may also have preferred that it not be played by three black men who called themselves “Death.” Hmmm.

A healthy culture transmits values. When it stops doing that, it dies. When the values no longer seem to be applicable, than the culture hunts around for new values, it undergoes a period of confusion while its forward motion slows down. That is where Japan is now. It's where America has arrived. 

The values of the left, that are present in both Japan and America, are a cultural suicide pact. The left pretends to add a spiritual dimension to modernism. It has been peddling that lie for two centuries and it has yet to deliver. In countries where it wielded full control, there was neither modernism nor values. Russia destroyed the economic, technological and spiritual potential of generations of its people. China is trying to use Communist values to avoid turning into another Japan, not realizing that those are little better than the collective obligations with which Japan rushed into the future. 

As America gazes at the ruins of Detroit and the insanity spewed forth by a digital frontier that increasingly looks every bit as eccentric and toxic as anything coming out of Japan, it is all too clear that we are Japan. There is no unique insanity in East, only a common disintegration of values in the East and the West. 

Asia and Europe have both witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations. It isn't technology that destroys technology that destroys civilizations, but a lack of values. 

To understand where Japan and Europe are, imagine an America decaying with no new ideas, losing its religion and values, losing its economy and finally its sanity, becoming coldly conformist and inhuman, while its families fall apart and its youth retreats into their own makeshift worlds. That reality is closer to home than we might like to think. 

America is destroying its values on an industrial scale. In a post-industrial nation, the destruction of values has become one of its chief industries. And while there is value in challenging values, in the conflict and clash of ideas, that requires that values go on existing, or there is no longer anything to challenge. And then there is nothing left but emptiness and madness. 

Another stupid product from an infomercial. Another ridiculous politician. Another protest. Another indicator of economic decline. Another day, week, month, year of empty nothingness.

I just used my "American Values" tag, on the last post, remembering all the flak I caught for it in the past. It does seem pretty worthless now, next to everyone scheduling "Eastern" medicines in with their meditation ("not just for new-agey folks") and no clue why they're doing either.

Yes, Obama came off like an idiot talking about Detroit, but while Motor City's politics and infrastructure suck, I want to remind you that it was also the home of Motown, and it's birthed cultural bright spots ever since. Detroit's decay inspired it's artist's to respond and they did, with dreams of themselves as George Jetson, and that holographic flower has been rising secretly from the broken concrete ever since.

 

Recreating, refining (and eventually replacing) the now-silenced jack hammer sounds of those good paying industrial auto factory jobs their parents had, but with a very early ear past old folks' Rock 'N" Roll to the real soundtrack Steve Jobs should've been influenced by, recording artists like Juan Atkins and Derrick May imagined how modems would "sing" long before they (or we) knew what a modem was. Both instantly took their rightful places alongside electronic musical visionaries like Warner Bros.' legendary cartoon composer, electronics innovator, and Motown's actual head of electronic music, Raymond Scott, German pioneers, Kraftwerk, Japanese giants, Yello Magic Orchestra, and the father of merging electro with Hip-Hop culture and Rap, Afrika Bambaataa.

I'm saying Detroit changed the world and, sonically, we'll never go back.

   

Detroit Techno is our past, present, and, now, our future. It's proven itself to be The Borg that will never stop. And if you ask me, as a statement about the people of America's most maligned city - one that's been effectively on it's back for the last 60 years - that accomplishment's nothing to sneeze at.

Sexually Compromising Underage Mormons (For Jesus)

For the entertainment value alone, I love any cult that creates honest sexual deviants:

Convicted by a guilty conscience, a Mormon missionary reportedly turned himself in for sexually abusing a female child, according to a police report. 

Patrick "Robbie" Oliphant, 20, of Carlsbad is accused of molesting a five-year-old girl while babysitting - a crime he reportedly confessed to in May. 

A criminal complaint from the Carlsbad Police Department states the victim's mother received a call from Oliphant's missionary leader, Stephen Hess, in Michigan where Oliphant had been living since April to train as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Hess said Oliphant told him what he had done because he needed to get if off his conscience before starting missionary work.

I know, especially around the Althouse, there's this shallow practice of interpreting Drudge's photo placement for "hidden meanings" - like he's not Geekzilla in a fedora but some fucking News Oracle or something (What's with Right-wing whites in fedoras? Ask Roger Simon, maybe,...)  

(Since they're hung up on visuals, has anybody actually looked at Matt Drudge? What does that tell you? Has he ever actually said or written anything of any significance? Is he even capable of it?) 

This (supposedly-non-NewAge) ritual, of trying to understand journalism by reading Matt's tea leaves, revolves around Drudge's placement of photos (something I know a thing or two about) but never his words, though words are how he truly tells the tale:

Drudge didn't write that - he wouldn't - that would be too honest. Here's what Drudge wrote:

I missed this when it happened, and I know how (why doesn't the national media spread these kinds of stories when they happen?) but we've all got to watch it now, because it's about as accurate a portrayal of what's wrong with adults today as we're ever going to get. This clip perfectly demonstrates the type of sophisticated irrationalism I encounter daily, supporting spiritual beliefs, anti-Americanism, feminism, racism, and almost any other unnecessary behavior I can think of. This, my friends, is "the average adult in America," portrayed in all their ugly glory.

Keep in mind as you watch: this is Monica Conyers - the wife of Democratic Congressman John Conyers - and if there was any justice in the world, this performance alone would be enough for an 8th Grader to take her high-falutin' job, on-the-spot. I betcha, since she displys such a similarity with the defiantly simple-minded "logic" NewAgers use, if we could look in Mrs. Conyers' medicine cabinet, we'd find every alternative medicine ever invented.

This is a truly sad, embarrassing, and frustrating statement on the rampant bull-headedness running through this country in 2008.

And it's so bad even a damn child can see it.
