The Haitian Revolution (1791–1804)

Here's a "fun fact," rarely told (in a way that makes sense) in American history:

The deal known as "The Louisiana Purchase" (which famously doubled the size of the United States on the cheap) was only offered to Thomas Jefferson because France's plantations had been overthrown by blacks - France needed to get some money, quick, because they knew there wouldn't be more coming from slavery in Haiti.

So, considering the black Haitian's role in fucking up France's plans for world domination, is it any wonder why America and France insure Haiti stays one of the poorest places on Earth today?

Uh-oh - 12 Years a Slave's white folks mad:

  “Hollywood Villain? No, Our Slave-Owning Great-Grandfather Was The Very Model Of Morality, Claim Family Outraged By Benedict Cumberbatch’s Portrayal In ’12 Years A Slave.’”

Mad at the truth:

William Prince Ford’s wife, Martha Tanner, was one of my great-great-great-great aunts, so I imagine that should qualify me just as much as anyone else to speak on this: William Prince Ford was a slave owner. He spent $1,000 purchasing a human being that he knew or should have known or suspected to be legally free.

I don’t know why anyone in Central Louisiana would try to defend him. Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance in the film was balanced; Ford didn’t come across as evil or depraved; he came across as ambivalent and passive, gentle but not assertive, “moral” (insofar as it related to his Baptist faith) but certainly not ethical.

I also don’t know who Charles Neal of the Louisiana History Museum is, but I know he’s completely wrong: Solomon Northup was not “treated like family.” He was enslaved by William Prince Ford; he was forced to live in squalor and forced to work long hours. He was nearly murdered at Ford’s home by one of Ford’s employees. “Like family?” Right?

Destroying Ego Is Eastern (I Heard You Guys Like That)

Jim Crow throws the gun arguments, today, into a whole new light:

“During a conversation with my childhood friend Doris Lloyd she shared with me some of the racist acts that took place in Holden, LA. She said that one of her friend's Mrs. Albin who lived in Holden, LA told her that when African Americans marched and protest in Holden, white men would lay down on the buildings in town with assaults weapons ready to shoot the protestors.”

How about you:

Have white people proven, to YOUR satisfaction, they can be trusted with dangerous weapons?

 

Have Blacks Made Shows Only To Make Fun Of Whites?

Despite the fact that an average of 14.6 million Americans tune in each week to track the adventures of the Robertson family when you count DVR recordings, I've never understood the appeal. For me, the question isn't why Phil Robertson was suspended. The real mystery is why he and his family -- who run a successful business making supplies for duck hunters -- have a television show in the first place.

I have a theory. Here is what you need to keep in mind as you waddle through this controversy: The reason that "Duck Dynasty" is on television is to make liberal studio executives at A&E, and parent company Disney feel superior, while making big profits for the studio.

The Robertsons are on television so that people in New York and Los Angeles -- the kind of folks who refer to anyplace in between as "flyover country" -- can feel progressive and enlightened by comparing themselves to simple country folks in Louisiana who, according to the elites, are neither. (And can make lots of money doing so.)

"Duck Dynasty' is this era's ode to "Amos 'n' Andy." In that show -- which aired on radio and television from the 1920s through the 1960s and which was created, written and produced by white people -- Americans were given the opportunity to laugh at African-Americans, adding insult to the injury that this group of citizens was already sustaining before the civil rights movement.

Now, Americans have a new group to laugh at -- a self-described "bunch of rednecks from Louisiana."

I'm with you 100% except for one difference - however they're portrayed, Duck Dynasty signed up for the heckling of themselves and others like them:

There wasn't nothing "reality television" about Amos & Andy,...

After the last election, wasn't it Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal who angrily insisted Republicans lost because we, specifically, "don't need to be saying stupid things"? 

Too late - here he is, now, on the subject of science in public schools:

"Let's teach them about intelligent design…"

See, Bobby, that's saying a really, really stupid thing:

I've got a nagging feeling that, if this keeps up, I'm probably never voting again,...
