Considering that the GOP has had a running love affair of late with the rich frat-boy types (who consider Gordon Gekko a role model), Randian "to the gas chambers" go! libertarians, and the only "Christian" groups that seem to be getting any headway with them are Prosperity Gospel manifest destiny types (these groups are a bit interchangeable, which was pretty much summed up in their nomination of Mitt Romney), is it any wonder that they aren't doing very well with anyone but the aforementioned groups? Is it any wonder that they are royally fucking up?
The only thing they've got going for them (and it should be worth noticing that I said "they" instead of "we" as in "we the people") is that the Democrats are essentially only catering to a very small, equally obnoxious, vicious, and entitled, elite crowd as well (they just talk a better game).
It really should come as no surprise to anyone who actually listens to ordinary people that neither party or its respective, core base is truly that well liked anymore. (this is possibly a good thing, considering -- there is yet the still the slimmest of hopes that sanity may yet prevail over these adolescent acting, Sigma Pi and the Young Marxists Club are the only things that live in us spiritually, assholes -- although goodness knows they've both done their best to make the rest of us believe and live in their world).
