A good question I've tried to answer a number of times: 

  France: What are the biggest differences between Paris and the rest of France? 

At the link, you'll get answers to a number of simple questions, but my favorite (which you never hear in the U.S.) is this one:

Style: I'm not really "in" but hell, when you're not in Paris, you can see it so quickly in people's clothes. We used to say "dressed like a 'provincial'". And the more southern you go, the trashier it is.

Basically, you get a lot of guys in plaid, short-sleeved shirts, and women in flowered bag dresses. That's what France really is:
