But it seems free-range eggs may not be all they are cracked up to be. According to researchers, hens kept indoors in cages lead happier lives.
A study found birds raised in ‘enriched cages’ enjoyed lower levels of stress and mortality, and were less likely to suffer from bone fractures or pecking than free-range chickens.
Well, a well ordered coop with plenty of room is actually the best thing.
ReplyDeleteThese "enriched cages" sound nearly as bad a scam as the "free range organic" bullshit...the customer is fooled in so many ways.
While I don't trust the organic free range yoga farmers, I'm not buying the industrial guys at their word either -- I've seen both of them play pretty loose and dirty with the truth.
Most people don't realize that "free range" means the birds have access to a teeny tiny run outside their industrial style lodgings...a run they will rarely use because they've never been allowed outside prior to entering the production line molt and the suckers are only kept for 1 1/2 years tops.
They're afraid of the outdoors.
