Beck Doing David Bowie's Sound & Vision Is Atrocious

I was about as envious as an artist could get, right up until the actual song started, which is awful. A complete waste of an orchestra, this one. Even the stuff at the beginning isn't musically interesting, just a lark for the film editor.

I generally like Beck's work, he can't rap for shit but he's interesting, though this certainly isn't worthy of the over-arching adulation he receives. This is just too much.

Shit, I think I'm starting to understand privilege after watching this. Still, he does have some decently quirky material out there:

That Dust Brothers production can make anyone sound good,...

All The Great Sound Jockeys (Swim In Identical Spaces)

You can tell a lot about people by the music they make and/or enjoy.

Starting with whether or not they're really and truly "open minded".

In Jazz's early days, after the customers had gone home, artists held "cutting sessions" to compete and play with some unorthodox ideas they liked.

Nobody else would've understood.

I'm saying the artists studiously avoided the so-called "music lovers" they knew were lacking interest in, or failed to grasp, creation in service to the ears and mind - and not their heart or feet.

Those people in need of a pulse to run daytime.

Denied the best.

That's never changed.

America's got a mighty river of ideas, but forced to flow underground, where the sun-worshiping, self-proclaimed naturists are too scared to venture or swim.

They'll overwhelm you they're all there is.

Their outlook rules the airwaves - always the same - a weak municipal tap, available on demand, easily adjusted for hot and cold, and totally unavailable if you don't pay your bill.

Their art's not a resource or a necessity - but still life and death.

That's their "show" - demanded and paid for BTW - and one more recording artist's explanation for the sorry state of American political life:

When you're listening to those guys, we'll always be all wet,...

Almost Slipped It Past Me: Our New Republican Anthem

Lord only knows
it's getting late
Your senses are gone
so don't you hesitate
To give yourself a call,
Let your bottom dollars fall
Throwing your two bit cares
down the drain
Invite me to the seven seas
Like some seasick man
You'll do whatever you please
And I'll do whatever I can
Titanic, fare thee well,
My eyes are turning pink
Don't call us when the new age
Gets old enough to drink
-- Beck's "Lord Only Knows" from the album Odelay

When Bad Isn't Bad Enough (That's Bad,...) Part I

This is Psy, a self-described South Korean "loser" who said:

"My goal in this music video was to look uncool until the end. I achieved it."

I agree - the music's awful, too.

But what's important, here, is how popular it's become. It's a really shitty song, performed by an uncharismatic artist, in that Euro disco style that's become fashionable with tasteless, brain-dead, wife beater shirt-wearing morons the world over. And that's what I want to talk about:

How, in a cultural wasteland, everything gets turned upside-down - until shit gets turned to gold - and that's when the ignorant are "happy."

You remember this, don't you? It's Beck doing "Loser," another song that became popular despite the fact that - if he had ever shown his face in a rapping contest - he would've been kicked to the curb faster than you can say the title.

No, no, no - there was none of Eminem's "8 Mile" suffering (facing physical danger while honing his skills to a knife point just to be good enough to compete) for Mr. Scientology. Beck just spit nonsense into a microphone - with absolutely no regard for meter - and then (probably) made a phone call to David Miscavage who (probably) beat their cult's followers, until they (probably) worked the phones relentlessly enough to get this classic example of lameness on MTV, and the rest is history.

As a cult critic, I see this phenomena playing out all the time, in pretty much every sphere of life. It no longer matters if anything is good or bad, true or false, harmful or benign, but only whether the impression of popularity can be brought to bear, so those too-easily influenced by the herd mentality will gradually (and gladly) move in it's direction. It appears, to those cowardly folks, being part of a group is more important than anything else in life,…including life (or any understanding of it) itself.

Reality (like - heh - Surf Music) takes a beating when we're trapped in this milieu:

To his millions of readers, Glenn Reynolds recently declared Twilight star Robert Pattinson was a "LOSER," after Reynolds saw signs the actor was suffering under the weight of his public betrayal by his then-girlfriend and co-star, Kristen Stewart - despite the fact Stewart was publicly apologizing for hurting Pattinson so badly.

Not an altogether unforeseen reaction, considering Reynolds supports the likes of Tracy Quan - a vapid woman who seems to get off on something she calls "Break-Up Porn" - and who considers it "brave" to cheat on your loved one, unloading NewAge playlists for narcissistic cruelty like:

Saying you’re sorry often creates the temptation to drown in your own guilt,…If you fear this apologetic abyss more than you fear breaking up, it’s possible you’re a coward. It’s also possible you have good intuition,…

                                                         Love-of-destruction translation:
Forget whatever vileness you did to an innocent, including one you claimed to love and paraded before the world as such. In that - and anything else - you can have it YOUR WAY!
Compare the attitudes of Reynolds and Quan with the compassion of The Daily Show's Jon Stewart (below) when it comes to treatment of Pattinson, the victim in this cinema-derived romantic drama:

And why not? In our current upside-down version of reality, which is just political correctness run amok, neither Glenn Reynolds (spoon-feeding millions of followers his blinkered, and destructive, outlook) or Tracy Quan (ditto - "intuition"?) are going to call anyone on such an act as the personal destruction of another.

Unless, of course, the attacker(s) is/are outside of whatever accepted group they're in.

Which brings me to the presidential race,…to be cont'd.

Scientology Is What Needs A "Second Chance"

"Maybe Tom Cruise can put some money in."

-- Martin Chávez, Albuquerque New Mexico's mayor, on the eviction of Scientology's "Second Chance" drug program ("vitamins and saunas") for attempting to cover up it was housing inmates convicted of violent crimes, reported by KRQE.com.

No, No, No - It Just Kills And Destroys People

"It's not a threat or some cult."

-- Giovanni Ribisi, actor and "active Scientologist" (AKA a member of "the world's most dangerous cult") who attended the December 2005 opening of Scientology's 'Psychiatry: An Industry of Death' Museum. His twin sister, Marissa, is also a Scientologist, "married to Scientologist indie-rocker Beck," according to Giovanni's web page on the very-cult-friendly (and sometimes wrong) online encyclopedia known as Wikipedia.

Sing A Simple Song

I don't know about you, but I didn't know John Denver was a graduate of EST (Erhard Seminars Training) I just thought of him as the "Thank God, I'm a Country Boy" guy who, quite unfortunately, died in a plane crash. But it seems:

"He was an early follower of Werner Erhard, founder of the self-improvement association known as EST (Erhard Seminars Training). Denver once asked Erhard if he might become a trainer in the EST organization, but was told he could contribute more by continuing his career as an entertainer, spreading the message through his music, of taking personal responsibility for whatever happens in the world. Several of his subsequent songs reflected that philosophy."

So I'm back to thinking about new wage manipulation of the public - including me, BTW - like EST getting me to sing John Denver's songs, internalizing values that are not my own, which is exactly what they, and the companies that hired them, were sued for, back-in-the-day, before EST went underground to re-emerge as The Landmark Forum. It's crazy-making stuff. And EST isn't the only one. Rick Ross showed Scientology was on PBS - spreading their whack-job ideas to all of us as kids - but I want to stay on the theme of music.

I've already mentioned Denny Fridkin's description of his whole band being sucked into Scientology - and we should all know about Issac Hayes, Herbie Hancock, Chic Corea, and Beck, by now. Keep in mind, like Tom Cruise and John Denver, each of those artists perform, partially, to recruit as many others into the cult as they can. That was L. Ron's vision.

Jeremy Spencer (above left, formally of Fleetwood Mac) was a Children of God member. That means he was having sex with children. Have the police gone after him as they've gone after others? One can only wonder. Many of those "Family" kids grow up severely damaged, or they're left, sleep-walking through life, spouting evasive nonsense, like, "People think this is all about sex, but it's greater than sexual relations. It's about how you relate and feel about people. It's about loving God with all your soul." Yea, yea - and all those damaged women, working in strip clubs, are really nuns - I get it, I really do. Jeez. Just shut-up and let me hear your demo, O.K.?

Amazingly intelligent, and crazy-as-hell, The Beastie Boys have totally-mellowed-out since bowing their heads to the Dali Lama, only to start producing some of the worst music of their careers (I've said it before and I'll say it again: The connection between new wage believing - and sucking at Rock 'n' Roll - is clear.). Sheryl Crow, who has always made God-awful music - but, strangely, keeps snagging TV commercials - has to be into,...*something*, being part of the one-square-of-toilet-paper crowd, because sane people just don't talk like that. And, of course, the latest addition to the new wage musical canon is the Smashing Pumpkins's Billy Corgan, whose latest outing, Zeitgeist, catches the dismal, depressing, feeling of these times perfectly.
