A New Approach (Before Anybody Walks Away)

I've been trying, for the longest, to get Glenn Reynolds to see the wisdom of The Macho Response to politics, but he still wants to play like I'm crazy, or so naive, I can't understand it on his level.

Well, maybe this'll show him:

"CARSON CITY — Surging Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle has had to defend her support of a prison program that her opponents linked to Scientology. Trying to head off that theme, Angle has eliminated from her campaign website mention of prominent members of the church, whom she worked with on other legislative efforts.

Angle has removed the claim that she, along with actresses Kelly Preston and Jenna Elfman, approached Sen. John Ensign to sponsor legislation prohibiting school employees from requiring students to take psychotropic drugs, such as anti-depressants.

Preston and Elfman are high-profile members of the Church of Scientology, which does not believe in the use of psychiatric drugs.

The apparent scrubbing of her website of the potentially controversial issue — critics of Scientology call it a cult — comes as Angle gains ground in the Republican primary, which has narrowed to a three-way race to take on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid."

Isn't that special? Openly tie a politician to their cultish endeavors and - BAM! - you get a response. And that response is, invariably, to hide and lie.

Not-cool.

Actually - it seems to me - an angry grassroots political movement, determined to take the country back, could use that.

Seems to me, if one wanted to purify the American political scene (as the Tea Party seems intent on doing) this would be like shooting fish in a barrel; much easier than the way it's being done now.

For instance: want to get rid of a powerful Democratic senator, like Tom Harkin? Then tie him directly to his NewAge quackery, his NewAge fruitcake friends, and NCCAM. It ain't hard to do - Harkin's been at it for over a decade.

Here, I'll let the late, great Martin Gardner supply some ammo, from all the way back in 2001:

"Elizabeth Targ is now the acting director of the Complementary Medicine Research Institute (CMRI). It is part of the California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC), in turn part of the University of California School of Medicine. Her institute is devoted to investigating such alternative forms of healing as acupuncture, acupressure, remote healing, therapeutic touch, herbal remedies, meditation, yoga, chi gong, guided imagery, and prayer. The institute’s literature does not mention homeopathy, reflexology, iridology, urine therapy, magnet therapy, and other extreme forms of alternative healing. Apparently they are too outlandish to merit investigation.

The NIH, through its National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), has provided funding for Ms. Targ to conduct a three-year study of distant healing on 150 HIV patients. The funding for the first year alone is $243,228, with a starting date of July 1, 2000. The NCCAM has also funded a four-year project to study the effect of distant healing on persons with a brain tumor called glioblastoma. The starting date was September 18, 2000, with a first-year grant of $202,596. Both studies, Ms. Targ said, will be double blind. It looks as though Ms. Targ, over the next few years, will be receiving more than two million dollars of government funds for her research on remote healing, the cash coming from our taxes."

That's money this quack (now deceased) got from one of our most nutty senators, all because Harkin thought bee pollen cured his asthma.

Not only that, but he's now spent almost a billion of our tax dollars on this foolishness.

I'd think, with the Taxed Enough Already crowd, that would make this weirdo ripe for the picking.

If that's not enough, how about Harkin's bullshit guidelines regarding herbal supplements - which he drew up with Utah's Republican senator, Orrin Hatch?

Both politicians were told, when they first drew the guidelines up, the rules weren't strong enough, and the manufacturers were crooks who would break the guidelines with impunity - but without penalty - which they've been doing with abandon. Now we read:

"Hatch said existing regulations, many of which he helped write, are adequate to handle any rogue supplement companies that want to make claims they cannot back up with science. The senator said the problem is that the FDA doesn't have enough resources to implement dietary-supplement laws or to aggressively pursue wrongdoers.

On Tuesday, Hatch introduced his latest dietary-supplement bill, which would boost FDA funding in this area and require the agency to provide Congress with an annual report about the progress made. The bill is co-sponsored by Iowa Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin."

Yea, yea. Sure, sure.

Does anyone in the Tea Party think - with exposure of the fact these two creeps are taking billions of our tax dollars and giving them to cranks and criminals to rip us off - the American people need these two foxes guarding the political henhouse any longer? I don't.

And there's tons of woo-woo out there to use against them.

I'm talking about the kinds of nonsense that, when grilled precisely, it's impossible for them to have a responsible explanation - so they're gone - without months of rallying or even waiting for an election.

Like Gandhi said of the British, they'll,...just,...leave.

Or am I so crazy, and naive, I'm not ready for politics in the big leagues?

Dissecting The New Age Movement, Part I: Who Is Looking Out For The Health Of The Nation?

"Dr. Elizabeth Targ, a psychiatrist at the Pacific College of Medicine in San Francisco, has,...tested out prayer on critically ill AIDS patients.

All 20 patients in the study got pretty much the same medical treatment, but only half of them were prayed for by spiritual healers. Ultimately, 10 of the prayed-for patients lived, while four who had not been prayed for died.

In a larger follow-up study, Targ found that the people who received prayer and remote healing had six times fewer hospitalizations and those hospitalizations were significantly shorter than the people who received no prayer and distant healing.

'I was sort of shocked,' says Targ. 'In a way it's like witnessing a miracle. There was no way to understand this from my experience and from my basic understanding of science.'

Dr. Deepak Chopra believes 'there is a realm of reality which goes beyond the physical.' (ABCNEWS.com)

Dr. Deepak Chopra, who is well-known for his insights on science and spirituality, says these prayer experiments are proving what he's been saying all along: There are healing forces in nature that science is only beginning to understand.

'What physicists are saying to us right now,' he says, 'is that there is a realm of reality which goes beyond the physical … where in fact we can influence each other from a distance.'"

I'm re-printing this to use it as a jump-off point, as a way to highlight the outright lies we're being fed by NewAgers - in cahoots with the media - to influence people into joining the ranks of The NewAge Movement. I also want to begin to show it is a movement, with many groups and individuals working together, to make an unknowing public think lies are truth and truth are lies.

See the banner above? I didn't make it. Somebody else did - somebody who is part of the movement. So there is a movement, and you've heard about it - even without much in the way of publicity - and, like all movements, those who are in it are doing things to attain certain goals. One of The NewAge Movement's goals is to covertly influence the rest of us. To work on us, without our knowing about it - that's why there's so little publicity or serious news investigations - which is dirty. And it is now those unethical people who are the ones influencing the collective mind, and politics, of the Western World - AND - though they do not have complete control yet, they have begun to get the upper hand.

Now, Noetic Science.com is your typical "fringe" NewAge site, filled with imagery of "spiritual" stuff (pictures of Buddhist monks, praying hands, etc.) but they ripped the text, above, straight from ABC News. So both of them (Noetic Science.com and ABC News) are using the same well-known quack, "Doctor" Elizabeth Targ, as a reference - though her studies were flawed, and her scientifically-NewAge beliefs caused her to die a sad, pathetic death - a fact ABC News and Noetic Science, both, could have easily discovered using Google.

They are, both, also using "Doctor" Deepak Chopra, the famous NewAge quack I covered recently for his anti-American comments on CNN - a venue where he had no place speaking, on a subject with which he has no expertise - not that he has expertise on any subject except for the gullibility of the public and fraud.

So ask yourself, why are these three supposed "information sources" (one, supposedly, looking out for your health and spiritual well-being, and the others - supposedly - for "news" to assist in your education and information needs) telling you outright lies and using the words of two delusional frauds as evidence? Because they're all - the quacks, the newscasts, and the spiritual believers - all of them are in the cult of The NewAge Movement. And they're not the only ones.

Is anyone going to sincerely think ABC News and CNN don't have the resources to know and print the truth behind two NewAge quack doctors? (Chopra's crimes should've been exposed years ago, but he's still a regular in such trusted media venues as PBS.) Has the press been telling us the truth about anything else - especially anything of importance? And why, if they aren't doing it, aren't they doing it?

I've got to go, but ponder that until I get back - and look around the site for more (I'm hoping this one post, with all these links and where they lead, will be enough to keep you busy for a while) - because I'll be picking this up, here, when I return.

12/4/08 UPDATE: This post was slightly re-written, today, for clarity - and the following link was added, above, so readers could understand the pathetic and sad tale of Elizabeth Targ - to show how NewAge beliefs (which most people think are "harmless") are actually a trap of delusional ideas that, ultimately, do great harm.

The Score (Stupid Don't Have To Mean Forever)

It's truly incredible:

Adults buying into ideas any 5-year old can see through.

Supposedly-educated people are blowing billions of dollars "studying" if water has a memory and if people can shoot mystic fire through their fingers.

And the majority of people who are "open-minded" to those unlikely ideas are the same ones who rail like nobody's business against a belief in Jesus - while registering no sense of hypocrisy what-so-ever. They even have the nerve to demand respect as they do so.

It's all very weird to me, because I can't be touched by this stuff - except to be surrounded by people who believe in some facet of it - which is a sort of Hell because any hope for a nice, normal, sane conversation (with people who hold no standards for proof) is impossible.

I'll never forget the chill that ran down my spine after telling my ex-wife a quack had killed her mother, and she replied, "You're just saying that because you don't believe." That's how insanity strikes me: like a shock to my nervous system. (I've hardly been able to play music since I discovered this stuff.) It's a physical sensation that really makes me dislike certain people, which I never hear the believers mention as they discuss their "positive" need to cause it. It's just all about them and what they get out of it: no one else counts.

Now my ex-wife and that quack are being investigated for two more murders. And for nothing at all. Nothing. Just a bunch of "beliefs" that led them to kill people. I get letters from their supporters, but they, too, steadfastly refuse to acknowledge the dead, or the pain it's caused me.

It's all about them and their anecdotal evidence - "It worked for me!" - with no concern for reason, the waste of resources, the deadly con that transpired, or the victim's families.

As the Western World appears to be going to Hell in a handbasket, I can't help but deduce it's because the previous generation (which was huge) started a process that is best defined by the phrase, "garbage in, garbage out."

Someone convinced them to "question everything" and, somehow, they seem to have gotten permanently locked into that phase every three year old goes through where they endlessly repeat "Why?" - totally missing what every adult discovers when encountering a scamp in that precocious period: asking questions is easy while endlessly coming up with answers is hard.

And anyone who's been through that experience knows an adult will eventually get really sick of that kid.

So what to do? I don't know. I've tried screaming "Grow up!" but my older brothers and sisters are convinced they don't have to - even after raising kids of their own.

My guess is watching an entire generation of spiteful troublemakers insist on dying pathetically, like Elizabeth Targ, will be enough to show those who follow them the error of their ways. Maybe not.

Personally, I'm just happy to know, one day, they'll be gone, and things can get back to some semblance of normalcy around here.
