Seeing as how the character isn't the original one (in the original story plot St. Nicholas -- probably not a fair hued person himself as he was from Lydia -- is a demon who has been overthrown by St. Nick, and thus not human at all), probably the racist worldview is part of this equation (I mean, I can understand losing the bad kid nabbing demon in the modern age because we don't want to terrify the kiddies, but there could be other ways to have done it).
