You Just Can't Count On The Smart To Be Smart

Not too long ago we did a Tweet about Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, that said:
Mark Zuckerberg says he's giving 1/2 of his money to charity because, I guess, he can't find anyone poor.
Now, finally, we've found someone who actually agrees with our perspective - how often is that? - while also having some other ideas we can agree with about how Mark's money could be even better spent:
Just in time for Christmas (or maybe Chanukah) another billionaire has pledged to leave half his fortune to charity. Not that Facebook CEO and Time magazine's "Man of the Year" Mark Zuckerberg needed any arm-twisting. He was -- he texts -- happy to spread half the wealth. It's right there on his Facebook page.

At only 25, Zuckerberg is already worth about $7 billion, give or take a few million. It used to take guys like Andrew Carnegie or George Hearst a lifetime to amass that kind of fortune. The Carnegies first had to sell the chickens and borrow £20 from relatives to immigrate to America. In Pittsburgh, young Andy worked his way up from bobbin boy. Zuckerberg, by contrast, was a spoiled computer prodigy from the get-go, always with the best tutors and teachers. No stoking boilers in a textile factory twelve hours a day, six days a week for this Harvard grad.

What gets missed in these self-serving headlines is the remarkable generosity of not-so-wealthy Americans. Americans who earn less than $20,000 a year give twice as much of their income to charity as those making $100,000. If you earn less than $25,000 you probably give 4.2 percent of your income to charity. That's a big deal even though Zuckerberg probably tips his doorman more than that. My not very subtle way of saying that for most of us, our 4.2 percent hurts a LOT more than Zuckerberg's 50 percent, which doesn't hurt at all.

IT IS BELIEVED the United States has 170 billionaires. So far 60 have taken the Giving Pledge, which is what you sign on to when Bill Gates or Warren Buffett calls you up during dinner and shames you into giving away half your fortune, preferably before your soup gets cold. And it won't do any good to get an unlisted number. Bill Gates has your unlisted number -- unless you make under $25,000 a year or own a Mac, which is pretty much the same thing.

What did billionaires do with their money before Bill Gates packed his bags for his little guilt trip? Well, it seems 19th and 20th century billionaires also gave away their fortunes. Yes, even the Captains of Industry -- dubbed "robber barons" by the pro-slavery, proto-fascist and "insipid muddlehead" (Nietzsche's phrase) Thomas Carlyle -- were civic-minded and generous. Carnegie put charity at the heart of his Gospel of Wealth, warning that "the man who dies rich dies disgraced." Meanwhile, old skinflint John D. Rockefeller confessed: "I never would have been able to tithe the first million dollars I ever made if I had not tithed my first salary, which was $1.50 per week." These men didn't believe it was enough to be incredibly successful or to create millions of jobs, or figure out new, innovative ways to make everyone's life better.

In fact, Carnegie went into poor, underserved areas and established schools in places where the government proved -- not surprisingly -- incapable. Carnegie was a meritocrat who wanted to give hardworking Americans "ladders within reach upon which the aspiring can rise." Zuckerberg has done likewise in Newark, New Jersey, only he's giving $100 million to failing public schools so they can continue to fail students for another decade and turn out another generation of doomed illiterates (by which I mean the incompetent teachers and administrators). Sort of the educational equivalent of propping up corrupt third world dictators with U.S. foreign aid.

The "robber barons" also established free libraries and art museums because they wanted to bring culture to the plain people, mostly because every time they holidayed in Europe they had to listen to some boring Brit lecture them about how uncivilized Americans were. Today their money is being used to fund exhibitions of shock-the-bourgeoisie art, because board members of these charitable foundations get a kick out that. Makes them feel superior. If that's not exactly what John D. had in mind, tough titty. He's dead.

Personally, if I had $7 billion I would use it a bit more constructively. I would buy MSNBC and fire Keith Olbermann. Then I would order the station manager to play nothing but Green Acres reruns. I would take the other $6 billion and place a $6 billion bounty on Osama bin Laden's head. And none of this dead or alive stuff. I want him Bonnie and Clyde dead. Eventually, one of his inner circle will succumb to the temptation and push Osama and his donkey (also named Osama) off the side of a cliff.
There you go. That was written by Christopher Orlet, and if he had only mentioned this blog it would've been perfect, though (we have to admit) the mentioning of Green Acres would've forced us to praise him, no matter what.

Radiohead (Catching Frequencies No One Hears)

Shit. I'm letting the facade slip too much. Today one of my new friends said he thinks I've got a "maniacal" laugh and asked me to stop.

I don't have many people to hang out with after my NewAge ex-wife killed her mother, and most of our old friends defended her, saying our marriage's break-up was my fault, specifically because I'm "a man". After she killed two more people, most of the others slunk away, too, unable to look me in the eye because of whatever it was they collectively - and wrongly - thought they were accusing me of.

When this new friend admonished me, I was reading about Gary Brooks Faulkner, the guy who said God spoke in his dreams, sending him to Pakistan on a mission to kill bin Laden. I started laughing when reading that his brother, Scott Faulkner, said "He's as normal as you and I."

So now I've got to watch my back: if it gets out that I don't share in these particular forms of "normal", I'll be completely isolated again, and might have to move.

People are fucking brutal.

I haven't heard one word suggesting my ex, Karine Anne Brunck, is going to prison. The NewAge quack she was working with in France, Robert Wohlfahrt, lost his practice but, as far as I know, that's all that happened. It makes me feel sick to know the kind of people they are, enjoying restaurants and spas, can be going on about their lives after taking someone else's, but I'm not surprised.

When it comes to spirituality, believers can get away with anything - including murder.

That's not an easy lesson to live with. Even worse, once it's put in your head as aggressively as it's been put in mine, it's also not an easy one to hide.

I met a chiropractor the other day and it didn't go well. Part of the reason was his being a disgustingly smug San Franciscan, but the main reason is "Quack! Quack! Quack!" kept screaming in my head.

Certainly, things went a bit better when I met the beautiful daughter of a friend - also a chiropractor. We talked pretty casually for a while, but then she asked me how it was I'm still available and why I'm no longer playing music.

By now I have an (admittedly unconvincing) cover story that she wasn't buying - How do I explain losing a career that put me in league with the rich and famous? - but, after I explained what had happened to my marriage, and she scrunched up her face and said I must be mistaken because "Homeopathy is natural herbal medicine" it didn't matter anyway.

This whole situation is just crazy.

Bin Laden Grateful

Osama Bin Laden expressed his “heart-felt gratitude” to President Obama for sharing the U.S. plans to leave Iraq.

Bin Laden released a statement saying:

“As you can imagine, running an operation such as mine is very costly, especially in these hard economic times we all share.

President Obama has my heart-felt gratitude for sharing his plans and allowing us to save thousands of man-hours and dollars in making our strategic plans.

It is co-operation like this that will help us all get through this global economic crisis.

Death to America”.

Hey, Barry, Can You Spare Some Change?

"Barack Obama suggested last night that removing Osama bin Laden from the battlefield was no longer essential and that America's security goals could be achieved merely by keeping al-Qaeda 'on the run'."
-- Tom Baldwin, showing us some of the promised “changes” Obama touted during the campaign, in The Times Online.

The Crack Emcee says, "That same poster, above, is hanging over my bed right now - seriously: I'm gonna get you, Sucka!"

Joseph Nigro says, "The irony is that it’s Obama who changed, leaving everything else the same. We can hardly wait to see what happens in the 'Hope' department.":

The First Day Of The Long Night

It seems like the only real pleasure I get from television anymore is staying up all night and watching Adult Swim. The Daily Show and The Colbert Report don't make me laugh. I hate the continuous commercials that are always telling me what to do (go green) like I live in the movie "1984". The movies and the news programs (if you can call them that) are also full of messages, so what's the point? There's no free thinking anymore, just cults and their followers, and I've got no place in any of that.

God, the post-hippie world is such a disappointment. Even after the invention and spread of computers, people have just grown stupid. I talk to them all the time, online, and what strikes me most is their selfishness. How they think it'll spawn anything but more selfishness is beyond me. So it can't last. Like Rome, they're bringing about the fall of society, and they won't realize what they've lost until it's gone. Then I'll have the last laugh, but I certainly won't think anything's funny. It'll just be a waste. The greatest country on Earth, felled by the willful immaturity of a generation that refused to grow up. Go on - dance your all-important dance, people - the music will stop soon enough.

People who know that race is superficial think electing a black president will stop our enemies. It doesn't get any more surreal than that. But that's cultism for you: I can't talk cultists out of their delusions. I was once married to a cultist who let herself be convinced she could walk through walls. When I told her to show me she just got mad - at me - this election is no different. Later, she let herself be convinced she could cure AIDS and cancer with her hands (Reiki). But when her cult friend with AIDS died she was too much of a coward to stay in the room. I didn't like the guy, so I, alone, watched the cultist die. My wife's mother had cancer and my wife found Dr. Robert Wohlfhart, a homeopathic cultist, to treat her mother in France. Her mother was in excruciating pain for, like, forever before she died. (The homeopathy and Reiki didn't work.) Then the "doctor" talked my wife into fucking him and turned her on to Kundalini Yoga and Ken Wilber. She didn't understand when I didn't understand. All that's come afterwards, to me, is a piece of that. Just the selfishness of others causing the death of all I held dear. But not killing me. Not a chance.

"We hold these truths to be self evident" is a phrase I think about, a lot, these days. I think I'm the last person of my generation who thinks what's self evident is important. Not what I "believe" is possible but what is and will be. Prediction: president Obama will meet Osama bin laden and it won't be pretty. Barack's just going to talk his head off - right into a basket. (The presidency, in real life, ain't an episode of The West Wing.) But it won't happen before the rest of you give in. What? You think Al Qaeda is going to be impressed by Burning Man? You're fools. And it doesn't pay to argue with fools. You're already the walking dead.

I've sometimes wondered how the world would end, and if it would happen in my time; if this generation would be up to the task of keeping America strong. I think I've got my answer. I had no idea, though, it would end like this.

Metalocalypse is on. Home Movies comes on after that. I love these shows.

I'ma enjoy 'em while I can.

And, no matter what happens, you should enjoy:

(Still Pondering) Rebirth Control

I'm building up a serious resilience with people.

Having seen the worst, I "get" no one's pure.

These scared little things, proving words aren't really worth much.

And expect mine won't be worth any more.

No surprise they produced Hitler; Stalin, or Pol Pot.

Please. Like Osama, they're par for the course.

And what about you, Oh enlightened lover, of artistry, music, and all that's divine?

Initiated any office intrigue, lately?

Plotted on anyone for not going along?

Cheated with anyone, married, just lately?

Yes, it was their fault, they just should've known.

It's like tending to flowers, each refusing to open.

Except when there's sex and you're talking about legs.

I get a kick how they hope they'll be reincarnated.

To come back as something more beautiful than before.

It's All About How You Look At It?

"These killings are shameful and distressing to our society."

-- President Jakaya Kikwete, of Tanzania, in his recent State of the Nation speech

Yes, yes, I know - many of you were hoping that quote was from President Bush commenting on Iraq - but no, it's actually in reference to what African witch doctors are doing to people for,..well, I'll let President Kikwete explain it further:

"Sometimes, word spreads around that body parts of people with certain physical attributes like bald people or albinos contribute greatly to attaining quick prosperity."

"Quick prosperity". Great. Can't Tanzania just get Bill Clinton and Tony Robbins to arrive and do their motivational dog-and-pony fire-walking medicine show? Fire-walking should have even more appeal in Africa.

But how embarrassing is it to know a President of the United States is involved in that nonsense? I mean, look at the pictures I'm using to accompany this post. Now, I don't care if he's wearing a suit-and-tie - these might as well be pictures of our former president - and, no matter how you cut it, that's pretty fucking "shameful and distressing" in itself. Here, try this one for a more accurate reference:

That asshole just announced he made $109 million pulling that crap - and that's mostly American money he took from gullible people. Yea, he can "feel your pain" alright - in his wallet. I swear, Bill Clinton is a fucking low-life on a personal journey to discover where the bottom is. But, hell, I have to admit, I'd pay 'em myself to stop African witch doctors from pulling this Tanzanian body part scam.

Bob Geldof says we Americans don't pay attention to Africa unless the "odd horror" occurs (which is true: I don't even pay attention to what's happening down the block) so it's not like I want to pile on, just because. It's just that, this story got me to thinking about all this nonsense I cover (or un-cover, as the case may be) and what'll be going through my mind when I die.

See, when I die, I imagine I'll be trying hard - really hard - to think of something "good". (I used to think, if I was lucky, I'd be staring into the eyes of my wife but that imagery won't fucking work anymore,....) Now, knowing all that I know about cultism, etc., I'm sure it'll be particularly difficult to come up with *anything* positive to focus on - and especially under duress.

From where I'm sitting now, it'll just be a lonely ordeal with nothing more pleasant to look forward to than this nightmare - started by my ex-wife - finally being over: No more NewAge. No more betrayals; no more gullible idiots; no more dealing with people, like the Clintons, who are out to do nothing more than swindle another sucker.

There's one born every minute, right? Sure, but - while I can understand the impulse to fleece 'em - damn it, no one can convince me it's the right thing to do. And the idea of a president engaging in it is just down-right depressing. I really don't like thinking about it. I don't like thinking about any of it. And I know I won't want to "later".

But "whatever" for now: one of these days this war will be over, and I'll be able to take down my poster of Osama bin Laden (authentic, right from Pakistan) and replace it with a picture of President Bush - my president - much the way people (during WWII) used to display a map of Europe, and eventually replaced it with a photo of FDR - their symbol of strength, courage, and integrity, through tough times - while, for me, President Bush's picture will represent the official end of the madness of the 60's: a thought that has always brought a smile to my face.

So, if I should die alone, I'll (hopefully) have to look on President Bush. Which, I'm sure, to many people probably seems like a strange thing for me to write. But, to many of those same people, it's gentlemen, like those in these photos, who have always been seen as a comfort: as long as (rather than killing albinos and bald guys for body parts) they were ripping off Americans to the tune of millions,...just "making a killing",...but doing it in a suit-and-tie.

*Thanks to Elizabeth Mika for the Tanzania story. No thanks, to the Clintons, for the rest.

The Politics Of NewAge Spirituality

*Looking at the links is a very important part of this post. I will continue adding more updated links over time to make the point even clearer:

"Somehow over the decades there's been a revolution in morals. Deficits, obfuscations and trickeries that were once unthinkable are now the norm."

That's the New York Times's David Brooks discussing politics, but really discussing the influence of NewAge occult thinking on American society as a whole. Don't believe me? Look at this definition of NewAge from the very-Christian Watchman Fellowship:

"Man is not sinful since his true essence is divine and perfect. The only discontinuity between man and 'God' is man's ignorance of his unlimited potential. Man is divine. He creates his own reality. Absolute truth is replaced by relativistic, subjective experience."

And here's one, from Lawrence A. Pile, while commenting on NewAge's effect in the secular world of management:

"There is no ultimate distinction between God and creation, or between one individual and another. The distinctions we see are unreal or illusionary. This means (among other things) that God and man are the same,...if man is God, then man has unlimited potential, able to accomplish anything he desires,...further, if "all is one," then there are not only no distinctions between God and man, there are also no distinctions between truth and falsehood, right and wrong, good and evil. In fact, all distinctions are mere illusion,...thus, the problem of humanity,...is that we have forgotten our own divinity. This lapse of memory must be overcome by undergoing what is called a 'paradigm shift,' a drastic change in the way we view the world around us."

So, pretty much, people are becoming full of themselves, doing whatever they want, without anyone caring about right or wrong, which allows for "deficits, obfuscations and trickeries that were once unthinkable" to occur on a regular basis. And if others get hurt? Well, those people should have joined the I'm Divine And Will Hurt You Party already.

Remember: Because there's no right or wrong in occult thinking, eliminating anyone that can't forget there's a right and wrong is O.K.. Actually, they must be eliminated, otherwise believers could be reminded they do bad things. And they can't have that, can they? They're "divine". Plus, the betrayal of the last occult-inspired good time - The Holocaust - was enough for most people.

Look at the happy Auschwitz workers above. Can you imagine those smiling faces once someone showed up and said "Killing the Jews is wrong"? The Nazis were occultists. Nazis believed in the "ancient" teachings so many feel compelled to study these days. That's what inspired the Steven Spielberg movie Raiders Of The Lost Ark - and it explains why Germans, instinctively, hate cults like Scientology. They've been there already.

The whole "reaching your full potential" route - becoming health-freak "supermen" who will "save the planet" by redefining right and wrong for others - that didn't work out too well. But the Nazis that made it to America brought many of these ideas with them, teaching at the Esalen Institute and Stanford. For instance, former-Nazis, like Carl Jung and Jakob Wilhelm Hauer, brought yoga to the West. NewAgers are on the same occult trip but, this time, without the immediate taint of Nazi violence. "Occult" means "hidden" and these are ideologies with a lot to hide - preferably right under your nose.

"There's a long history of embarrassing siblings, wives, children; candidates ought to be thankful that the public really doesn't care."

- Robert Watson, a political scientist at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida, quoted in the Christian Science Monitor.

"In the Pew polls, the biggest turnoffs in a presidential candidate – atheism and a lack of political experience – had little to do with their divorce count or the number of phone calls they get each week from their children."

- From the same article

See? "The public really doesn't care." So someone betrays the people who loved them most - who cares? There's no right and wrong, and the only people they hurt are the people who they, previously, defined right and wrong for - their wife, kids, and friends. Who cares if they put them in Hell? The occult is all about Hell for anyone who was dumb enough to actually believe what they said - that believed in right and wrong. And that's not you - you don't trust politicians, right? And even Hitler hated atheists.

It's all so simple when seen that way. Those ignorant people, who believe in ethics and morals; they deserve the pain they get at the hands of those who don't.

So who are the NewAgers? It's pretty much anyone who's bought into the culture-covering tapestry of the following:

Astrology, auras, black and white magic, bioenergy, Brahman, Buddhism, chakras, chi energy, Christ-consciousness, Christian Science, Church Universal & Triumphant, crystals, Druidism, Eastern mysticism, ESP, est, extraterrestrials, The Landmark Forum, firewalking, Gaia, gnosticism, Hare Krishna, higher consciousness, Hinduism, Homeopathy, human potential movement, Kaballah, karma, Magick, Mind Science, Native American spirituality, near-death experiences, neo-paganism, nirvana, parapsychology, prana, psi, psychic, reflexology, reiki, reincarnation, Religious Science, shamanism, Silva Mind Control, spiritism, Tai Chi, Taoism, tarot cards, Theosophy, therapeutic touch, trance-channeling, Transcendental Meditation, transpersonal psychology, UFOs, Unity School of Christianity, Witchcraft, yin-yang, Yoga, and Zen.

C'mon - you're in there somewhere - you planet-saving, yoga-using, Buddhist health-freak you.

No, these are not just the tin-foil hat crowd. They're as common as Catholics. They're the people who are always suggesting one should "keep an open mind" - but not so open you can think they might be wrong or don't know what they're talking about:

And, obviously, such people seem to be everywhere now. Listen to this description of Hana, on the east coast of Maui, Hawaii:

"This remote fleck of paradise some 52 miles, 617 hairpin curves and 56 one-lane bridges away from the nearest city possesses mana, “a life energy,” an unseen spiritual force,...recent émigrés like Woody Harrelson, Kris Kristofferson and George Harrison. Most recently there is Oprah the Divine,...Paul Fagan, a paternalistic San Francisco zillionaire,...various Gettys, Mayor Gavin Newsom of San Francisco (above) and other A-list haole."
"Oprah the Divine". Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? (Courtesy of the New York Times.) It does sound good, as long as you ignore the fact that she promotes every bad idea under the sun and causes great harm to people by doing so. Oprah keeps "an open mind" about everything. And she's everywhere - America's highest paid celebrity - which is all that matters. She can do no "wrong" because there is no "wrong" to do in her world of "find your own truth.".
My point is, despite their ubiquitousness, there are places believers gather. They call them "power spots". In America, they're mostly well-known places like Mount Shasta, Sedona, Arizona, Boulder, Colorado, and (of course) Burning Man. In politics, there's Bill Clinton's Global Initiative and many other places where people gather to decide what to do with the rest of us. Listen to Bill discussing raising our "higher consciousness" at Davos (yes, I've shown this clip before, but I love it):

It's all so tacky. So much hubris. A man who openly cheated on his wife (giving others the impression it's cool to betray your loved ones) while letting Osama bin Laden freely kill Americans (but now complains the president isn't going after him correctly) and who now hangs out with con men like Tony Robbins (above) is also deciding he knows, along with his rich friends, what's best for the rest of us. That takes balls.

But, since he and "Saint Hillary" are NewAgers (she even helps bad-mouth his lovers) it's all "relativistic, subjective experience" that counts, so - in Bill's own NewAge mind - they're A-O.K.. Until - just like the Nazis - somebody calls them on it.

So, being the political beast that I am, I'm calling them on it. I'm calling all the NewAgers on it. It's time for this nonsense to stop before more people (or our country) gets hurt - just as Germany did - by occult ideas.

As we should have learned after WWII, ideologies are dangerous things. They don't conform to reality, that's why so many are demanding we conform to the occult ideas they - no matter what their stripe - decide to embrace.

San Francisco, of course, is a power spot. And a quick look at today's San Francisco Chronicle reads like primer - with my links as an expose - on popular occult ideas and how they fit in real life:

Just another wild ride at 15th anniversary of Critical Mass in S.F.

This is the headline of an article celebrating the group-think that regularly attacks people with violence who commit the crime of driving cars.

President's switch on climate criticized as lacking new policy.

Here, the paper ignores the idea that the president might have bigger priorities or that the environmental movement has been taken over by ideologues.

The Sunset District's new supervisor meets the people.

This is good because Supervisor Carmen Chu (above) just hours after being appointed by the NewAge mayor, Gavin Newsom, admitted she got the job though "I don't presume to know much about District 4."

Nourishing souls with the poems of a great mystic.

Because we all know how important words from the "great mystics" (from the year 1207) are to us all. Why it's enough to make you think Osama bin Laden's 13th century philosophy is right on target, right? I mean, NewAgers always say "People are free to believe what they want to believe." And - since nobody's actually thinking - who needs their head for that?

But, when it comes to politics, you do need your head. You do need to make distinctions. You have to make choices, between good and bad, right and wrong. You have to learn to separate your beliefs from reality because your beliefs aren't reality:

They're just your beliefs.

And - in the serious business of politics - forgetting that can get us all killed.
