Eddie Van Halen used to be so artistically paranoid (I don't know what else to call it) he regularly performed "Eruption" with his back to the audience so no one could figure out his fingering.
Now a fourteen year old girl, Tina S., is doing it effortlessly - and blowing guitarist's minds world-wide.

ReplyDeleteEddie & Co. should just get over it. True humility (!) is knowing when to stuff the pansy ass-ed-ness and take some joy in watching somebody else do well (even with something you "did"). HEck, if he was a truly humble man, he'd be helping her out -- as he would be taken by her skill.
That's what being truly humble means (which is also the same as having a healthy, intact, non-neurotic ego) -- knowing what you're good at, knowing how good you are at it, and being so comfortable with that, that you don't mind seeing other people doing well (maybe even better than you) too. Lots a floks preach about being humble -- but they really aren't at all (because they can't comprehend the meaning of the word). They're the furthest things from it.
