Orson Welles On Psychics And Cold Reading ("Crooks")

The man knew his stuff - and had a good enough heart to stop,...

  1. Psychics (and Jehovah's Witnesses -- at least around here) go after really vulnerable people suffering some misery.
That's a sign of just how crooked and nasty they really are.

I don't think people realize that that is part and parcel of the game: they aren't going to try and touch you unless they think they've got an easy way into you, so when people say "oh, how could somebody be so stupid"...well, when your little kid is dying of leukemia and/or your spouse is recently gone, or you're really down and out in any of the ways a person can be that way; your life has pretty much hit bottom (but you're afraid it could go lower), then come back to me and tell me about these stupid people.

It's a worse con and theft than many actual thieves pull off, and society is cool with it.
And that's the thing that really sucks: people are cool with it.

(and I'll believe a psychic when they can pick every trifecta for me in the daily line at Arlington -- which I would bet against them doing...talk to my dead dad? nah, do something that would really impress me, and him, bitches!)
