I would argue that the best scenario would be for the protesting party to have access to weapons as well (a detail about Jim Crow which isn't lost on me) -- but then you wind up with some sort of crazy arms race or something.
And it has to be remembered that this is a comment by someone who actually uses what firearms they have to procure food (not that they couldn't also be used for defense and the like, but well, I like owning a hammer too, it's very useful for building and fixing things...but there doesn't seem to be a need for walking around with it at all times or to take a swing at somebody with it -- and I would deeply appreciate it if other hammer owners would not go crazy with them, thus leaving hammers accessible for those of us who would like to use them).
