I've Begged Whites To Stop Blogging About Race Online & They Didn't Care (Now Most Of Their Contact Begs Me)

  1. Zora Neale Hurston, well known writer and personality from the Harlem Renaissance who was no stranger to the practices of Marie Laveau, had an interesting take on slavery.

"Someone is always at my elbow reminding me that I am the grand daughter of slaves. It fails to register depression with me. Slavery is sixty years in the past....Slavery is the price I paid for civilization, and the choice was not with me. It is a bully adventure and worth all that I have paid through my ancestors for it. The operation was successful and the patient is doing well, thank you."

Quite an operation and she obviously wasn't speaking for all descendants of slavery. This TMR post seems to be about forgiveness and alludes to the reluctance of black people to forgive white people, and of course no one is waiting for black people to express gratitude for the way they were brought to this country. I have more black links than I can keep up with and while they're largely concerned with ways of making the best of the situation they find themselves in I don't see any of them coming forward with the notion that the situation is necessarily worth all that they paid through their ancestors for.

I like having black people in the U.S. but if I said it was worth enslaving them since they weren't apt to get over here otherwise most people, meaning all races, would be offended. If I said black people should never have been brought over here because it's caused more trouble and grief than it was worth then I have to consider an America without the priceless contribution black people have given it.

Too bad I had to take up all this space just to say I don't have an opinion but you hooked me with the Marie Laveau video.

  2. No, actually, you've touched me with your thoughtfulness. And, of course, I love hearing someone is happy blacks are here.

I'm almost sorry that article had to be smushed into a racial dialogue because I think it's point - that forced forgiveness is harmful - applies to many more situations.

    Thanks for writing!
