I can only guess it's narcissism, but, for some reason, poor Liz Cheney is incapable of seeing that (ever since NBC's Jeff Zucker, wrongly, released the "grab the pussy" tape) we've watched President Trump being betrayed - by those he's served and serving - for no other reason than he exists. So (rather than defend him from haters in "The Resistance") she's trying to get the GOP to become another one - for the sake of the party's popularity.
That inability to see ( and, thus, defend) right from wrong is why she simply has to go as a Republican leader.
